RT Cats suck

Mine blew out about 3 weeks after I installed it.

So it's gutted right now.

I'd like to not kill so many cute little ducks and squirrels and other woodland critters - so time to replace it.

Anyone know the Carsound 3" Cat Part Number for a Fed Spec 97 Maxima? (i.e.: No O2 hole) - or better yet - a place to get one?

Thanks!

If you killed a new catalytic in 3 weeks you have other "problems" as well. You may be running way too rich if you have a turbo setup or something...

I had a few welds go bad but for the "innards" to collapse/melt you normally would have to overheat it.... The brick inside could come loose I suppose then it would be covered under warrantee if it happened in 3 weeks...

Well, I bought it used with the 3" custom exhaust - so no idea what it was put through the year before that.

Actually, the heat shield seperated and made a lot of noise the first week.

Then the 3rd week the Cat went.

I've heard an overwhelming amount of bad sotried about RT and I'd like to stay away from them anyway. Mostly about the Heat Shields and welds coming loose.

Either way - does anyone know the dimentions of our Cats? I can just figure out which Carsound model to get by going off that.

i have had mine for 3-4 years and its fine. they dont really do anything, you can see right through it practically. might as well have a stock one with the insides removed.

I'm glad yours is fine.

But I won't buy another one.

The insides going could have been abuse from the previous owner or even me - but the large amount of people who have had issues I can't ignore.

Example:
http://www.carreview.com/parts/exhau...x.aspx#reviews

That's a very large percentage of unsatisfied customers - not to mention the horror stories I've heard from this board alone. If Vortech had this percentage of blowers fail within a year - they would be out of business.
And a Blower is infinitely more complicated than a Catalytic Converter with 0 moving parts.

<OK - I know - $3500 vs $100 - but you get my point>

There's many many more - I'm just not going to go through them all.
Even people with "RT Cat Hater #x" in their sigs - that takes some pretty bad service and/or workmanship to make a hate group.

So again - anyone have info on the CarSound Cat model number? Search gives me zilch.

Why don't you think about just getting a test pipe? Save some money and weight, and you might even get some power out of it since you're FI. And nothing can go wrong with it

I could have told you RT sucks years ago Ian. The monolithic brick inside breaks apart and rattles around. That's what happend to mine. I ended up using a Carsound 4-gen cat with 2.5" in/outlets. Cutting the flanges off and rewelding the pipes to size for my 3-gen. It's been good for the last few years.

RT is local to me, and I know a shop that does a lot of work for them. Even this shop said not to go w/ RT. For $200, you get a Catco core which is essentially what you can find on eBay for like $40 without flanges.

Before I bought my exhaust setup, I did some research on cats and the like.... the consensus on RT cats were that they are garbage. I took a chance on Cattman's "Fastcat" (just released to the public IIRC) My setup is Cattman y, Cattman fastcat, cattman catback. It is small and doesn't really look like a cat. I'll try and get a pic of the cat installed on my car so you can see its size relative to everything else.

Here's some pics of the fastcat for those who are interested.

Talked to Brian - he can get me a 3" one of those (without flanges) for $150.

I'm considering it or the Carsound (which is what I thought I had until I realized it was RT) for $65.00

RT sucks. Same thing happened to me. Heatsheild started to rattle. Substrate came loose and rattled around. I punched it out. But then I cut it apart to use the flange for my current exhaust.

You can forget trying to get any warranty through RT. They are a terrible company. I got mine from CM and they turned their shoulder to me when I had issues. Thats what sent me off the deep end about CM. Both companies are terrible and should never be boughten from.
