Fuel Issues

Okay, I was going to title this thread "What do you mean it's not long enough", but I can see where the weary minds may mis-interpret that.

I have an issue with fuel systems. I have been driving my car steady for the past week. Last Saturday, I didn't drive her at all, but her battery and all is well and charged up. Sunday, as I attempted to get her going, she wouldn't start. Took me a few minutes, I finally got her started, she died. Another minute later, she started, and we headed on our way.

Pretty much everything I ned to get to is on the highway, so I proceeded to head out, and she just wouldn't cooperate. She was doing this hesitation, stuttering thing, then all of the sudden, she's kinda kick in and accellerate. Well, she refused to even be near an acceptable highway speed, so I had to turn off onto a side road.

Dad said it was the fuel filter; we didn't know if it had ever been changed. Bought a new one, installed it, and found when we removed the old one, there was black gas all in it, and it was basically gross. My father also told me that there was a hose that was too short with all of this.

Well, the filter didn't fix this problem, as yesterday, she just about never made it to work. She has a good 1/3 take of gas, other fluids are okay. Could this be the result of the too short hose? Because this isn't the first time she's done this action...she did it a couple weeks ago, and that's why I stopped driving her in the first place.

That seems to be my favorite smilie.

what codes are in your ecu? I am guessing it may be your coil....maybe a MAF....it would help a lot if you pulled your codes from your ecu.

what you are describing could be either fuel or spark related or vacuum. I am guessing if you pull your codes you will shine some light on the sitiuation. The Haynes manual is only about 15 bux and it has a pretty good write up on how to pull your codes.

Sounds exactly like what my 88 Maxima was doing last December. My problem was the Mass Air Flow meter.

I think I've got a Haynes manuel I'll look through it and see what it teaches me (which is alot).

Glad to see I'm not the only one who has this issue at one time or another. My father promptly told me that I had to be making it up...that is, until it did it to him.

sir jmax by skipping do you mean kinda of a bump bump bump thing it does when it idles?

and if it were a maf thing it would be much more difficult to start other than try it once it dies try it another time it works...if the maf were out it wouldnt work it it would sputter and die real bad and it would eventually work when it warmed up some from the attempts to start it...mine died on me....liiked up a new one and it was $300...i got lucky and got a working and recently remanufactured one from a junk yard for $50 with some other parts i needed/wanted

100% is the MAF. I did get this problem last week with my Maxima 87SE when my MAF having some water in. Idle speech is ok but when you step the gas the engine will immediately die. You should check the MAF and clean the connecter.

Well, after arguing with my mechanic (aka, Father...), and replacing the fuel pump once again (at his urging...the "There's still just crap in the car, it sat for two years!" speech), I too agree it's MAF. The car ran great for 12 hours, exactly 12 hours!

Mine idles fine for a bit, then gets rough. Car hadn't died but a few times, but when I press the accelerator, I kinda expect it to go forward, lol.

I'm off to hunt another Haynes manuel, as my sister let my niece "color the pictures" in mine...grr.

I love this car, I love this car, I love this car...have to remind myself that

I just replaced my fuel filter on an 86 and it seemed fine. I must be lucky.
