New Hood struts

Got a bargin on a pair of new hood struts, but they didn't come with the captive bolt that you attach it to the car with.. The captive bolt is a ball joint style, I can't manage to pop the old strut off the bolt.. Anyone replaced theres lately??

Hood struts + no bolts=plank of wood to hold hood up

yeah man i had the exact same problem....let me jus tell you there is no way to get the bolt out because of a little ring inside of the socket that holds it in. What i did was cut the old struts in half around the socket(so the screw jus fell out)
As much of a bicth they are to get out they go in real easy!

A dealership near where I live is charging $259+tax for the hood struts and installation. Is that too much?

Not if the bank tells you to get rid of some money because their vault is full. Geez!!! $259?!? If you lived close, I would change them for a tank of gas. Try it yourself.

I got mine at Autozone for about 20 a piece, they work damn good, and were the easiest thing I have ever done. Got them done in 5 min.

Seriously, do you want to pay 259 to make it so your hood stays up without propping it? Thats just getting rediculous

Where did you cut yours, I used the Dremel with a cutoff wheel it cuts the strut well enough but it doesn't lool like it wants to move in a hurry, and still 3 more to go .. I tried hacksaw useless compared with dremel.

ok looking at ur pictures....let me jus clarify for you what i did. I cut cut a line(starting at the lip jus like you did) but i did not go all the way around, i only went about half way. Then i cut another line parrell to the first one(same length) then i cut a third line(so that the shape i cut was a U or a little box depending on how you look at at. From there i more or less pealed the rest of the socket away(that part is kinda hard to explain with out showing you). Like i said earlier the biggest problem is a little yellow ring inside the socket that holds the screw in. If you can damage the ring then its just a madder of playing around with it until the screw comes out.
Going off what you already did.....just cut the socket into pieces. From there you should have more room to work with and eventually jus pull the screw right out.
I wish i knew of an easier way to do this, but i dont, this is the way i did it

Thanks again mate ! I went to Nissan at lunchtime, the guys at the parts desk scratched their heads.. apparently the bolts come separately and would cost more than I paid for the struts (there ex-japan).. they didn't no how to remove either bar cutting as we've done.

Autozone hood struts suck in my experience. I'm on my second set in 2 years and they now allow the hood to close with a slight breeze. Apparently when I bought them, they had a LLT, but when I took the first set back, they said nope..no warranty.

I had my receipt (I keep receipts for alot of stuff), and yeah there isn't a warranty stated on the receipt. I convinced a manager to replace them free, instead of me buying NEW ones, and having to put the old ones in the new packaging and then returning them. Also, while I was at autozone the other day, a guy at the counter bought some hood struts, and the lady who was ringing them up said to him "we won't put these hood struts in the computer for the LLT, but keep the receipt...they are under warranty," I was thinking WTF! 2 stores nine months ago told me no warranty even with a crinkled old receipt. bah.

Anyway...from my random searching and reading, I remember the ones from Pep boys, seem to last long.

I usually like autozone, but their hood strut brands suck. When I get too angry again at my *hitty hood struts, I'll head over to Pep boys. The only thing that sucks about pep boys, is that you HAVE to keep yer receipt for warranty purposes.

Has anybody figured out a way to remove that ring from inside the ball ends? I just picked up new lifts from Advance Auto and I need to reuse the OEM bolts. Some way short of a Dremel?

My hood struts have failed as well. I assume this is just one of those part that wears out? I was looking at Autozone's website. Would you think they'd call this a "hood lift"?
