5W30 vs. 10W30

I live in So. California. Which is better to use and why? I use the regular dino oil. Any recommendations? I've read the Castrol GTX is good stuff. Does that high mileage oil do anything or is just a marketing gimmick? Oh, I have over 150k on my 1995 Maxima SE. Thanks!

ive been told that 5w-30 is for cars with less than 90k miles, but i could be wrong. you will get better answeres in the fluids section of the board.

You would want to use 10W30
Virtually all new passenger vehicles sold in the U.S. use either 5W30 or 10W30 oil. The difference between the two is that the 5W30 flows better when cold, so if you live in a cold climate or operate your vehicle in a cold climate during the winter months, you should use 5W30 if it is the preferred oil for your vehicle. If you live in a sub-tropical climate and don't operate your vehicle in cold climates, then 10W30 is acceptable as long as the manufacturer specifies that it is permissible to use it.

quaker state high mileage 10w30 in warm months, 5w30 high mileage in the cold months. Doubt it matters too much but I would like to believe so.

10W30 is just slightly more viscous than 5W30, that's all. Also, the lower the temperature, the more viscous any given oil is. So if you're starting the car in cold weather you definitely want 5W30. Supposedly a more viscous oil offers better protection if you are rough on your engine but there's also the drawback of slightly reduced power and fuel economy (very slight), besides the warmer weather requirement.
