Hi everyone,
I am going to switch to Amsoil synthetic (0w30 or 10w30 - not sure yet). Amsoil dialler has offered me a good price for Amsoil filter, so - what do you recommend? To stay with Nissan (I know it has good oil filters) - or use Amsoil (which is probably designed for it's oil)...

Thanks

RE:Amsoil

I personaly use amsoils filter with there oil because like you said it is designed spacificaly for it's oil.Also make sure you use 10W-30 since that is the suggested weight of the oil for your Maxima.

filter

1st, how good of a deal is it? Amsoil is, imho, too expensive, especially when mob1 is so good. Second, the oil for our car is not 10w30, its 5w30, says so right on the oil cap.

Hi Mrloyd,
I made a direct request to Amsoil, and they answered: "Use AMSOIL 0W30, 5W30 or 10W30 oil"...
Do you think 10w30 is not so good for Maxima?

Thanks

5W-30 is recomended by Nissan

5w-30 can be used in any climate from like -30 to 120 F or something close to those numbers so why do you want to use 10W30 so bad if Nissan doesnt recommend it?I have used 10W30 in my Max once or twice because my Amsoil dealer ran out of 5W-30 and it made no noticable difference also I have used 0W-30 and that also made no difference that I was aware of either,but I try the best I can to stick by Nissan's rules and you probably should to.

I just dubble-checked - a Nissan dealier offered me $21-75 for filter, and Amsoil - $17-95... Plus $75-00 for 5L oil... This is more expencive, than Mobil one ($55-00), but this oil can be changed after 12mth/60000km... Dealier advised me to change it after 12mth/40000km, but I don't think I can run so much...

gots to agree

Stick to what the car calls for, not that ive noticed a difference either. Just on a side note, and not to **** on anyone, but isn't it funny how we say "stick with what the manufacturer says!" and then go and put on intakes, ypipes, and superchargers? Oh, and if you live for north you may want to try running a lighter oil like a 0 weight systhetic in winter just for quicker lube at startup, with the opposite being the case down south. May want to use higher weight in summer. Generally with a syn, it aint much on a difference.

Nissan Recomendations for Oil

I use 10W30. Here's why;

1. I have the 98 Max Nissan service manual and it shows that I can use 5W30 or 10W30. The temp ranges are below;

5W30 -32 F to 100 F

10W30 0 F to 100 F

2. I live in the NorthEast (NYC) and don't expect to see temps below O F.

3. I think Nissan recommends 5W30 because it has the broadest range, so the Maxima driver in Canada or Alaska or Florida can all use the same oil, and Nissan has to pay attention to every Maxima driver.

4. Here's the clincher; the oil properties are most ciritcal at the edge of their range, i.e at the 5 or the 30. So, the low range is most important at startup, a 5W will flo more quickly in cold climates than a 10W will. But, when the car is warmed up and running, the more important aspect will be the higher end of the oils' weight, the 30 weight end. Both the 10W30 and the 5W30 will have the properties of a 30W at high end, but which one will likely hold up better?? You know, when you spend, like enthusiasts tend to do, alot of your time in the upper RPM band, like 4 to 6 grand on the tach, makin' moves. Answer? 10W30 Why? it contains less addatives to stretch its viscosity rating, therefore not compromising its performance as much across its range as the 5W30. You ever notice when an oil manufacturer show's off their product resistance to breakdown, it's almost always their thicker weight brand? They'll sell you the 5W30 version, but test the 10W30 or 15W50 they have.

Am I knocking Nissan's recommendation?? No, just showing that their recommendation may not in the best interests of your situation.

Sorry for the long post, Had to share.
