My 98 is making the screeching sound on startup that I believe is the starter. I know I could probably do the re-grease procedure described herer http://www.motorvate.ca/mvp.php/516 but I found a good deal on a 5th gen 2000 starter. Will it work?

I seem to remember a thread about this a while ago and something about teeth count, but I don't remember if would work or not.

I believe so, and I also believe it has more teeth- I think

 

the 5th gen internals are put into the 4th gen starter case, the teeth are a lot differnt and it makes more torque for easier starts. I got mine swapped at by Jeff at Maximum Tuning, and i couldnt be happier!

btw just taking a 5th gen starter and trying to bolt it up will not work, im not sure about the 2000-2001 since they have the same block but i know the 3.5 starter wont work

 

So what year 5th gen starter did you get the interals from? The difference in tooth count doesn't mess anything up? and how hard is it to swap the internals out from the 5th to 4th if this is neccessary?

 

Just get a 4th gen starter but make sure it has 10 teeth instead of the 8. straight bolt on. The starter with 10 teeth is the newer more HD use, better, stronger performer.
