"Car Thief Reports Theft Of Car

UPDATED: 7:06 am EDT May 5, 2005
BALTIMORE -- Memo to crooks: When you steal a car, and it goes missing, it's not a good idea to report it stolen.
Baltimore police said that's what Gregory Alston did Tuesday morning. Alston called police to say his white Nissan Maxima had been stolen from in front of his apartment building.
But the car wasn't his. Police said he stole it at gunpoint two weeks earlier. It turns out the victim had spotted the car and called police, who towed it away.
So why did Alston call police? Investigators said he left his wallet in the car and wanted it back. Alston has been charged with armed robbery, possession of a stolen car and a handgun violation.
Detective Gregory Jenkins signed off his report by writing, "Again, this really happened.""

It's weird how network affiliates have dumbed-up to their audiences. After all Dan Rather said about the crazy election where Gore won or didn't win. Common sense says though the article may not be untrue, there are very likely omissions to sensationalize it.
Think about it, you steal a car and it is missing, and your wallet is inside. Of course you want to get your wallet back, that's gonna implicate you in a felony. You may contact law enforcement if you believe that will enable you to get the wallet back without you being identified as the thief. Anything could have happened--maybe he called police to see if such a Maxima were recovered, and he was gonna go to the impound under some other pretense and get his wallet back, but the cops id'd the call. Simple, maybe he pretended he was the victim so he could get access to the wallet. But the news leaves such a detail out so they can dummy-up the story.
Moral of the story--don't believe everything you read, especially if it's on the web.

I know the media distorts things and leaves things out and changes the stories (dont ask me how I know......), however- there ARE some really stupid people in the world. Few examples, remember the guy on Wildest Police Videos? The guy tried to rob a convenience store with a cop in full uniform in line with the cop car outside. A bank I used to work at got robbed, and the robber handed the teller a note on a piece of mail with his address on it!
I still don't think that all the facts are being disclosed in this cute little news story. The man stole a car, the car disappeared with his wallet inside a car that didn't belong to him. What should he have done, nothing? When the car is recovered as a theft, the wallet would implicate him in a felony. He'd be dumb to sit there and do nothing.
The news is very silly nowadays. I just saw a story where a news team drove around and proved that they could take their laptop and steal internet services from people who had Linksys and Netgear 802.11x wireless routers without any security set such as a WEP key or MAC filtering, which can also be easily be broken but are rudimentary defenses. You could say that news crew is stupid as well, proving on the air that they could so easily steal someones services. The key is steal. How are they any less dumb than the thief on this other story?
