O2 sensor confussion, 0901 vs 0302
O2 sensor confussion, 0901 vs 0302
Ok, I'm really confused. I went to the stealership back in February for a code reading for the CEL and it came back with a code of P0135 (0901) which is the O2 sensor gone bad. Today, 05/18, I decide to pull the codes myself and come up with 0302 which is the Exhaust Gas Recirculation system. What's that? I read the definition in the sticky and I'm confused and it's all Greek to me! I need some help here? What should I fix? I'm at 210K and want to get the most from my Max.
The reason I decided to pull the codes is because I finally have the $$ saved to fix it and didn't want to order one part and later find I need another or that more has gone wrong since the codes were pulled in February.
HELP!
P.S.
Also looking to replace the rear passenger caliper. Where are the best deals at? Are there instructions on the Max? Is it a bear to change?

1. Was the O2 sensor problem ever fixed?
2. DTC 0302 indicates that the EGR flow was not as expected. This can be because of a faulty EGRC solenoid, stuck EGR valve or clogged EGR passages (other less likely causes exist also).
3. Get a rebuilt caliper for about 80 bucks from any parts store or online (partsamerica.com for example). No different from replacing any other rear caliper. Note: to retract the rear piston, it turns in, do NOT compress it back into the caliper housing.
4. Do yourself a favor and get a Haynes manual for the car - it will help you out tremendously.
Also for more info on what an EGR system is just
Cheers.

No, originally 02 was never fixed, that is where my confusion is coming from on why a code was not thrown for that now. The CEL light has been on forever and now that I am ready to fix the issues it seems to have gone astray. So do I go with the original fix of the 02?
I'm working on the purchase of a manual in the near future when repairs start to take place.
I know that the 0901 and 0302 are two different things. Thanks.

You are sure that only one code was displayed right? because if there are multiple codes, they will be displayed one after the other... (I'm not trying to state the obvious, just want to cover the basics).
If the O2 sensor code is really not being posted anymore, then don't worry about it for now - fix the EGR problems. The other thing you can do is reset the ECU and if/when the CEL lights up again, check the codes and go from there.
See the stickies for info. on resetting the CEL if you haven't already done that.

Great - you've done all the things most newer members don't do.
I have the EGR 0302 code on my 96 too - I reset the ECU a few weeks ago and it hasn't reposted, but I intend to get in there and clean out the EGR system as outlined in this thread:

Having a Haynes manual will definitely help.
I hope to take pics when I do mine...lots of others on the org are popping the 0302 code... someone will eventually have a how-to written up (I hope).

Wow, that was a great link! Didn't get it quite finished but now I understand it a whole lot better.
Reset the CEL last night and thus far no return. I have only put on appx 50 miles but that is a good sign. Normally it would come right on when restarting the car.
Now when thinking about it, we changed the KS back in Dec/Jan sometime and only disconnected the battery thinking that the light would go off. But it never did. Maybe it has been on all that time due to the KS issue. Is that possible? The stealership told me it should reset after so many miles on its own.
I would be estatic if the CEL didn't make another reappearance! Thanks for the great help! Thumbs up to the org!

Ran the codes again and now it's throwing a 0302 like before and 0707. So my final analysis is to replace all 3 O2's and see if that clears the EGR code. At 210K it can't hurt. Also getting ready to changed the rear passenger caliper, Axles, rotors, pads...who knows what else. This is just like having a car payment.
Could the O2 be causing the EGR code? Will I pass emissions in Wisconsin with any of these issues?

What does AFR mean? I have also had it into the dealership to have the codes checked. And after looking through some repair papers, I see it has come up in the past with Emissions checks in the past 4 years. Although, odd that I wouldn't get a code til about 1 year ago. Ya, ya, I know it should have been fixed before then but $$ was tight. Now I'm going all out and changing all 3 O2's, axles, rotors and pads, tie-rods (most likely) and rear caliper. Got the tax return and I want to get it over with.
