'01 in '97 tranny swap (problems?)

Hey all,

Finally got my car back with new '01 5spd tranny, ACT stage 1 clutch kit, and Fidanza flywheel....I love it, but i think there's a problem with my speedo. It seems to be off about 10% or so. Any ideas on what's causing this? Some things I've thought of so far are:

- My mech. put in the speed sensor for my '97 and it really needs an '01 speed sensor?
- New gear ratios on the '01 tranny as compared to the '97?
- I'm also pulling CELs for knock sensor and MAF sensor....could this be related?

Any input would be greatly appreciated....thanks!!

-Jon

congrats on your tranny swap. as far as the speedo, many 00 and up trannys use the abs sensor for the speedo. its our 4th gens that have a sensor coming strait from the tranny that tells how fast your going. how can you tell that your speed is off about 10%?
also i really doubt that the speed sensor would cause your knock, maf sensor to go. so get your haynes manual and a muti meter and test those's two sensors that you have a check engine light for

Yeah, how do you get that your speed is off 10%.

I've had my 01 tranny now for over a year but have never even thought to question the accuracy--I have no way of knowing. My 01 tranny had no speed sensor--had a factory plate covering it--so had to use my '95 speed sensor.

Hhmmm... what exactly does this mean? How can the ABS sensor give information to the ECU about wheel speed? I guess this mismatch might cause some problems though... 10% is just my guess.... I drove next to my friend and his speedo was reading 60mph and mine was reading about 52mph. I also had suspicions when I was on the NJ Parkway doing "60" in the middle lane and blowing by people everywhere. It doesn't seem to match up, but then when the speeds approach 80, it seems to be more accurate. I guess I can't really know without having a cop shoot me with a laser, LOL...no thanks :-) I don't have any diagnostic equipment with me so I can't check those sensors, but as soon as I have the chance I will. Thanks for the tips

Not to threadjack, but...

I own a 300zx TT and need a RELIABLE daily driver. I've been considering purchasing a 95 5spd Maxima with 76k miles, but I'm scared to death after reading about the transmission bearing problems. Anyone care to elaborate on the estimated amount of cars with this problem?

Well, mine started to leak at around 80k. If I were you, I would check for oil around the driver's side axle that is smeared on the tranny case. The I would go underneath and check the end of the axle that goes into the tranny for any free play (there shouldn't be any). Then I would drive the car and note whether you hear and metalic creaking noises when starting in 1st or 2nd gear. If the 95 passes these, you should be golden for many many miles. Just be aware that you potentially have other issues in a car that is 10 years old: rear main seal, knock sensor, O2 sensor, coil packs, water pump seals and some smaller items: ignition switch, starter, engine coolant temp sensor, etc. that have been known to fail in the 4th gen maxima. All in all, nothing too terrible as long as you avoid the tranny bearing problem. I personally use my 95 as my daily beater and almost every time I drive it, I am thankful to have such a capable car as my beater.

Would you agree that I would be better off trying to find a low mileage 97-98 model?

Right, but how many other people can say the same? Understandably, all I have really read is people that have problems, most people don't post that they DON'T have problems. I just don't need to get another "project" car, I already have the Z for that.

Aside from being younger (assuming similar miles), there is no real benefit. Not a whole lot changed 97-98 but you will get additional problems from what did: emissions hardware. It is almost a given that your EVAP system will need servicing. Certainly, the tranny bearing problem is still there.

Do you know for a fact your tranny has no bearing problems? Because tranny fluid is thick, you don't get a puddle on the ground until the problem is severe. For 20k miles or so, the leak could be coating the bottom of the tranny with oil and someone who didn't check would be none the wiser.

some actually dont have the problem, i dont have it yet, i got my car at 120k, its now 143 and i checked the axle last week, almost zero play in it. but i dont know if the original owner ever rebuilt it. but i know a friend who has 180k on the tranny and shifts perfectly and no leaks.

I just did a quick timing job on the highway today using the handy mile-markers...I blew through exactly one mile in about 54 seconds today with the cruise control locked on "60mph"...I did the math & it comes out to about 66mph. There's the 10% variance....but it doesn't seem to be constant, because an "80mph" mile took only about 43 seconds, which (not sure if I did the math right) equals a ~75mph speed.

To be totaly sure how far off your speedo is. First drive your friends car note the exact mileage and note your exact starting point, drive one mile exactly so if you start with xxxx5.3 the you should end with xxxx6.3. Note your ending point. Now drive your max front the same exact points and note your mileage if you mileage was xxx3.7 before and then after your drive xxx3.4 the your 3 tenths slow. Just so you know for sure.
