maxima is guzzlin crazy

i swear thats it, im selling this car. all im gettin is 14-15 mpg in city. im tired of $45 fill ups every 10 days and i only get 200 miles when i hit the 1/4 full mark. wth is wrong with this car? i got new intake filter, fuel filter has 10k on it, tires are all running on 35PSI, car has 40k miles on it and it guzzles like nothing else. this month ive spend over $200 on gas. ive noticed one thing, when i get gas from different places, my gas mileage drops down by a very large amount. for example, i usually get gas from this SHELL right infront of my house. when i get gas there, i usually get about 60 mpg when i hit the 3/4 full mark. i have gotten gas from 76 on the other side of the block a few times (like 5 times at shell then once at 76) and EVERYTIME, EVERYYYYYYYTIME i get gas at 76, i get like 40 mpg when i hit the 3/4 full mark. therefore, a 20mpg decrease when using 1/4 of tank !!!! what the hell is wrong with this pos? **** this car....

don't get rid of it! but just to clarify, you probably meant 200 miles per tank up the the 1/4 mark, right? not 200 mpg. cuz that would be nice.

I definitely feel you on this one...driving in nyc i get about 200-220 on the tank. This REALLY f'in sucks. Especially now that I'm on break from college and these gas prices, i'm a bit sorry that I didn't get some piece of shlt 4 cyl car.

Mike have you done the following:

1) check/replace plugs (regardless of how long its been since you replace it, your plugs could be fouling up for many reasons thus affecting fuel efficiency)

2) clean TB

3) clean IACV

4) check/adjust idle speed

5) check/adjust throttle cable (making sure that the cable isnt too tight)

6) check ECU for KS ghost codes

I just changed the KS on my car and my car's fuel effiency and power is back. Also, its been really hot here in the valley and if you use your AC a lot or leave it on most of the time, fuel efficiency goes down. When the AC is on, engine idle speed rises, costing you more fuel. Also, if you are using anything below premium, your engine's fuel efficiency goes down automatically. Yes, premium costs more, but in the long run your tank of gas will last longer.

My 95SE with 141k miles is averaging 23-24mpg. With the new KS, I expect it to do a lot better.

BTW Mike, 200 miles at the 1/4 full mark is very good! Did I hear this right??? I wish my car can do that.

I was getting about 25 mpg with mixed city and highway driving with a bad KS (just recently replaced it so I don't have any current numbers). But then I don't drive during times that I would be sitting in traffic idling a lot. I also like to alternate between the premium and midgrade fuel so maybe that has something to do with it too.

It's the driver that's getting bad gas mileage, not the car.

Change both front O2 sensors.

As funny or mean as that comment might sound, its true! If you shift at a low rpm rather than 2k+ you can get ALOT better gas mileage. If you let it pick up speed at a slower rate than mashing the pedal, you can increase you're mpg again.

When I shift I usually shift
1 - 2 at 1500rpm,
2 - 3 at 1500 rpm,
3 - 4 at 1250rpm,
4 - 5 at 1000rpm.

And if I do this the whole time, and drive city the whole way, I get about 24 mpg. If I mix this in with highway driving I get anywhere from 26-32 mpg.

Isn't that shifting too low? I give my car gas so that it shifts at 2-2.2K. There's a big difference when i let it shift at 2.5K+ in gas mileage. On the highway autos are monsters for mileage because our 4th gear is so tall.

nismos14: Is that not too low in RPM to shift? I shift at about 2250RPM, and get about 18-19. I do mostly city driving and about 15% highway.

When I tested my gas mileage a few weeks ago I combined both city/hwy and quite a bit of "spirited driving" in the mix just so that I would get a result that would show my LEAST gas mileage the way I drive... Over 340'ish miles (gas tank was then at 1/4 tank) it turned out to be about 26mpg..

If I drive from full to when the gas light comes on I will get ~450 miles on a tank

Change your plugs, clean TB.. make sure all the o2 sensors are good etc...

I have a 98 SE with 114,000 miles and I shift at about 3000 -3500 most of the time (cause I like it< that's why), and I still get a combined average of 20-22 mpg. I think I am in need of new O2 sensors and maybe a KS though, as I used to get 22-24 with the same driving. I usually accelerate hard, and hold higher speeds (generally 10+ over whatever the limit is) in the city and drive about 80 -90 on the local interstate. If I wanted better mileage I would drive slower and not accelerate hard, if I'm going to do that.....why the hell do I need a maxima? You might as well go buy a Prius if you are going to drive slow and worry about it.

Maybe because a maxima is a family car and its not "meant" to be a race car?

Mooney, I shift like that and I have no problems. Just have to feel out you're car and see where it shifts well, and where it feels like it bogs down.

+1 For changing Plugs. Before I took out the bosche pats I was getting pretty bad milage, I noticed when I would do my Sav -> Atl trips, when I get there the tank is just about empty. Put the NGK coppers in same trip I arrived with Half a tank left, Big difference.
