Serious problem with '99 Max GLE (wierd noises coming when off throttle)

Hello,

I have a 99 Max GLE auto with roughly 96k km on it.

Recently an odd noise started occuring. It occurs only when you are off throttle and moving. So when your foot is on the gas (no matter how little you are pressing the pedal) all is fine. But as soon as you release the pedal, this odd thug-thud-thud noise occurs. As if something is hitting something else. It makes no sense how it only occurs when you are off throttle.

Some pertinent info is that my stock exhaust system is rusting slowly and the muffler already got replaced since it became cracked! Could it be the exhaust pipes near the engine are banging against the cross member? if thats the case, how come it only occurs when you are off throttle?

Thanks.

Check your motor mounts.

I did more investigating today. I don't think its related to the engine at all, because the noise still comes if the engine is off and I coast the car down teh driveway in neutral.

The noise is related to the wheel speed as well. The faster I go, the more pronounced the noise becomes. I'll put the car up on the ramps and try to investigate. I'm not sure on what I should be looking for though.

thug-thud-thud
If it sounds like a clicking (Thud-thud) noise, it might be your axel.

Keep in mind that your engine is shifting back and forth depending on different throttle positions, moving the exhaust around.

Mine is making noise only around 20mph. hear this from the front driver side so far. sounds like something like not turning smoothly. I'm just guessing might be the bearing? 150k car need new bearing?

Here's an update:

I jacked up the car and turned the driver's side front wheel..and it makes a clicking noise when wheel turns, there's play in the wheel.

Also when i removed the wheel and put it back....the noise was gone. However I think it is temporary.

While ur car is jacked, take a pry bar and check every bushing for excessive play, might be tie-rod end. Also check driveaxles boots, to see if they are not cracked or leaking lube. If everything is fine, could be wheel bearing. Good luck
