Has anybody installed filter into cabin air intake. If so how, specs: filter size etc? Pics...?

 

Im not sure if the 3rd gen has a cabin air filter. I thought that they were only on newer cars and whatnot. Could be wrong though.

So u have not heard? Surely smbdy smwhere smtime has tried that mod...

Some or all? cars have it before fan; blocks very easily flow... I'd try to figure out a place after the fan (pressure side). Question is, how one could get room for it, which filter to use, where to get the frame for it... and if that smbdy would be found out, first proto is always problemaTic.

Questions: What problems arise if filter is after AC? Whattodo to have that 1" space needed....

this is just a WiLd guess, but I would imagine it is to filter the air coming into the cabin.

I would love to have this filter on my car. At least, it can relieve my allergy problem. Let me know if you can come up with...

there isn't one, and last time I had that area all apart, it didn't look like there was enough room for one. Any application would have to be a very custom installation.

actually, you'd be surprised how much crap the AC condenser traps. My flow rate was horrible (and I needed a recharge) so I got that done, but it still wasn't cold. sure enough, it was blocked pretty well and my regulator was shot (among other things) so i pulled it all apart... wow, i've never seen so many pine needles in one area before, plus, the AC insulating tape is VERY sticky... that trapped a lot of dust as well.

no clue how to rig one up on the max, but it is normally set up by the blower motor. at least that's how my van has it.

 

I heard that they're also a real PITA to take out of some cars. I really don't see the point in going all out and spending all of that money and time just to put an in-cabin air filter in the car? I can see where what xtmphan was saying about allergies, but you're not going to get like crystal clear air or anything.

Definitely. So many manufacturers are adding, or have added these. Even in the 80's. And it's for a good reason. If you could see what one of those pick up after only a few thousand miles... It's insane. The BMWs that have two in them look just as bad with the same mileage. I think Wiking has something here. As soon as I stop working 12 hour days, I'll do some brainstorming.

Its possible to rip the motor off and just DIY "E36 -snap on". Typically such projects with my hands are repeated so many times before I have repaired what I break, that I would prefer to see sombdy elses ideas first. It should utilize readily available parts.

One of the problems would be the evercontinuing filter swap: the filter change has to be easy, not stealer$hip moneywell.

Who would know what the reasonably priced best filters are (cars readily available at junkyard where the assembly could be scavenged)

If I read this forum right, this mod (whatever it is) has to be done with/around the blower assy, I guess? So there is only one installation "location", blower pressure side... This means another blower?

 

I'm not a buffy on the Maxima HVAC, so bear with me. Where's the HVAC air intake? A foam filter (like on some home HVAC or computer/electronic fan filter may do the trick. Is there any easy way to access the condensor? (I sometimes have a smelly one).

 

the intake is right along the edge of the windshield, behind the hood.

as for accessing the condensor, remove the glovebox, then remove ~6 screws from behind there. You must disconnect the AC hard lines before doing this to remove the condensor. you can pull out the whole unit, but not the cover.

 

the condensor is in front of your radiator
the Evaporator is by the blower motor.

 

Sorry, how do you access the evaporator for cleaning it?

I was working at a Nissan dealership a couple months ago and noticed some literature advertising cabin air filters available for new or older cars. Sounded like it could be retrofitted. I would go to your local Nissan dealership and ask about it. Or at least call them. Good luck. I was thinking to do this sometime too. Let us know what you find out.
