I always get some crazy mpg coming back from my grandmas, like 35-36. It's a ride made up of steady 75 mph on the turnpike, and then 60-65 on local highways and back to about 60 as I approach the big city. There is almost never any stopping. So this time, instead of gassing up after getting home, I drove to work Mon-Wed. Mileage this time? 30.01 baby, with 3 days of city driving totalling 44 miles.

Because the results can be repeated, they are reliable. I think the best way to calculate mpg is to go both directions--because many times one way yields less mpg than the return. If both directions are averaged, it usually comes in at about 27-28.

Last week I got 32.21 MPG coming back from Portland to Seattle. I topped off my tank in Portland, drove 146.4 miles at 80 mph (had my cruise control set most of the way, 10 over 70 speed limit is pretty safe here), and just out of curiousity I filled up when I got home to see what my highway economy was. I filled up and the thing shut off at 4.4 gallons. I thought that can't be right, so I started pumping some more, and it immediately shut off again and some fuel spilled out. I look and I put 4.545 gallons in. I was impressed for a 10 year old car that I beat on and drag race a lot to put out like that.

 

The fact that the fuel spilled out proves that the tank was full--and if it didn't spill before you filled it up last, that means you actually used just a little less than what you used to calculate. I find that you can usually put up to another .4 gal after it stops. Next time try a round-trip, it might be that one way the mileage is worse than the other. Or, maybe the Seattle to Portland trip is even higher, you don't know until you try.

 

The reason that I decided to fill up again right after the trip is that my needle stayed above 3/4 for the whole trip.... Usually I am down to the halfway mark after 150 miles of everyday driving; which I get usually 19-21 MPG.

 

I get great highway gas mileage, too. (Of course, the mods help with that.) I still get 30-35 mpg on the highway, and my car has about 173,000 miles on it. Occasionally, I drag race on test & tune night at the local track. As a matter of fact, I got my lowest e.t. a couple weeks ago: 14.697 @ 93.14 mph. I'll rally with someone through the twisties as well. I keep the car maintained, and I've used Mobil 1 syn oil religiously for about the last 100,000 miles or so.

No smoke and no drips. The car runs well. I see no signs of its demise. What a great car!

 

I drive almost only city, and my car is an 89 GXE, all stock so that probably might explain part of it, but I usually only get 16-17 mpg. anybody else this low? should i expect better? thanks, ken

 

I have gotten that bad before too a couple times on a tankful, but usually I get 20 in normal city driving. Do mods really help your fuel economy??

 

I drive about 60% city and get around 13 mpg, even when i drive mostly highway I still get the same 13-14 mpg. Best I got in the last 5 months was 250 miles on around 16 gallons.
