Headlamp Sealant
Headlamp Sealant
Does anybody know what Nissan uses for the sealant in their headlights and if it is availabe for purchase? I will be opening my lights for a second time in order to paint them. Since they will be apart a lot longer than when I cleared them out I'd like to get my hands on some of this.
Oh, and before someone suggests it, I will not use silicon because I may decide to open them up again in the future just like I am doing now.

Use butyl, it's the same stuff that is currently sealing the headlamps. I can get it but only in black. It works wonders for sealing out the elements while still allowing you to reopen your lights. If you open your door panel and look at the stuff that holds the clear plastic sheeting on the door, that's butyl.

Yea, JB Weld, that's what you want if you never want to open up your lights again and want to see it drip through the sealant area right onto the refelctive part of the headlamp inside the housing.
By the way, I don't know if you can get butyl at your local parts store. I've never seen it there. I work in the movie industry and we use it all the time for various things. I get it from the movie expendable store here in Hollywood and it costs about $25.00 for the roll. The butyl is shaped like a piece of rope so you can pretty much just lay it in the channel and press the lights together. No need to reheat the lights.
A tip, try to take off as much of the stock butyl as possible, lay out the new butyl in the channel and press together. A couple of channel locks and you should be set.
Good Luck!

Yeah, I was wondering exactly what this butyl substance was. So it's sort of a butyl rubber tape?
Thanks again, Ill have to see what I can find.
Edit: Butyl Tape Well I think I found what i am looking for.... Unfortunately I cant seem to find a supplier. If anyone knows, I would love to know.

Peel off your door panel and look at the black sticky stuff holding the plastic sheeting to the door. That's Butyl!
