Gauges don't work...

Hey guys, sorry if I sound like a noob or something, but I sprained my ankle yesterday so I have no chance of getting outside to check this out. I will also post this in the electronics forum, that way I can get as many answers as possible. Everything inside my car works, except for the gauge lights and the shifter position lights. Is there a fuse just specifically for the gauge lights and the lights for the shift positions (P, N, D... etc.), or could it be that switch that dims the lights (I know that if it's not plugged in, the gauges will not work, but I don't know if that applies for the shifter lights.

modern cars have the dash illumination running from either of the sidelight fuses. if both sides are working externally then the fuses are not the problem in most cases. check the bulbs & dimmer first.
