Overheating in gridlock after 3 hrs driving w/AC on?

Well, i was just wondering if this was any kind of a problem...maybe common or what not...im not sure. But i was coming home from miami 2day and about 3 hours north(had AC on going 80-95 whole trip no problems) in sarasota we hit gridlock traffic...stop and go... then i notice my AC gets hot and useless and a few seconds later i notice my heat guage is all the way upp too the H...so im like oh S*** proceed to get off at the next exit....but even before then...once i turned the AC off the temp gauge seemed too be falling slowly but surely... it wasnt overly hot out and there was an over cast..... i let the car sit for a lil bit at the gas station, and continued on my way home, no problems, most of it, no AC tho, didnt want too press my luck. but tried it when i got closer home...it blew cold and no signs of the heat guage rising.... butt just wanted to post up on here if this is common when running a car so hard then going into gridlock or if there might be a bigger problem somewhere in time???......

Sounds like the condenser which sits infront of the radiator is clogged up with alot of dirt, leaves, etc and it creates a air restriction to the radiator. Restricted condensor can do alot of damage to the motor if you don't notice the temp going up.

Make sure your coolant is full and there are no coolant leaks.

How many smiles on the car ?

well all my coolant fluids are good... so that rules out a leak right?... as far as a condensor clogged... its got a few bugs....but nothing major....ill hose it out 2marrow just too be sure. but the car does have high milage... around 114k.... this happined at the *** end of a 850 mile trip, which was 2 long trips of 280ish then alot of stop and go house hunting for the rest

it could be the fans are not working, or you have stuff between the condenser and radiator which restricts air flow. 114K miles - U ever do a coolant flush ? I tend to think the condenser is eighter restricted, or the fans are not coming on. Fans do not work at speeds over 35MPH by default. ECU thinks that there is enough airflow already and no need for the fans.
