How much does it cost for a Muffler

I have a 2001 Maxima. Last week while driving the heat shield fell . I went to the dealer to ask him if he can fix it. He said that the heat shield is not required and found that my muffler is split/cracked and will have to replace it. He said it will cost me $500 for a chrome plated one and $385 for a ordinary muffler. What is the difference ? and is the price he is quoting right ?

Thanks

Do you want to stay stock or go aftermarket?

theres nothing different about those two mufflers, one being stock, and one just being stainless steel. they should have the same performance. i dont know anything about chrome plated mufflers, but anyways, 385 for stock muffler is way too much. and for 500 bucks for the SS is a ripoff too. personally i wouldnt get stuff from the dealer. you might want to try somewhere else. i got my SS exhaust from here http://www.frankencar.com/products/5...aust/index.htm

or just buy a used muffler from someone who went aftermarket
you can get a nice low mileage for fairly cheap

all depends if you want aftermarket or stock. I personally would go with maximum performance's idea and get a used one.

i was looking into warp speed performance y pipe and cat conv and a magnaflow for my 2000 GLE. my current stock flex pipe got out of place and its bringing my rpm's and pick to a stand still. arghhh. so i've been looking all over the place for a decent price on the exhaust system. so far wsp is giving it to me for $160 ypipe, $99 high flow cat, and around 350 for the magna flow. so the whole bottom unit from front to back is around $650. Help with some info. I saw the frankencar website. pretty cool but they wanted around $500+ for the cat back only. any input will be appreciated. Newbie.
