Ok i know there is a warning light in my car but it never glows red. Even when I'm just before E it never lights up. How many gallons do you'll fill? According to edmunds, its suppose to fill 18.5 gallons. However, my fuel pump stops at 16 gallons.

The most I've seen anyone put in even when running out of gas is 18.1. You can go on E for some time before the light comes on and stays on. It may flicker on and off initially. When it comes on and stays on you have just about 2.0 gallons left I believe.

The light trigger has varied drastically from one Maxima to another (based on the anecdotal evidence on this forum). It's better to not let the tank get empty - why do you want to suck all that crud from the bottom of your tank into your fuel system. I always fill up at 1/4 tank whenever possible.

Don't let it get that low!!! I know how exciting it is to see how close you can get to E, but its not so good...

True..my pride will be hurt to have a hooked up max on the side of the road and walking x amount of distance to find a gas station, then you have to walk back with a gas can... sorry no roadside assistance. I get paranoid when the light comes on.

My gauge goes well below E before the light stays on. I just go by milage. Since I drive pretty much the same everyday to the same places, I try to fill up after 300 miles on the tank, most of the time i only fill up 15.5-16.5 gallons.

trust me on this , constantly running too low on gas will help to kill the fuel pump. the pump is cooled by the fuel it sets in, so if there isn't enough fuel to keep it cooled, it won't last as long. 1/4 tank is a safe minimum. after all you already know how your mpg is. test something else like going all day in the sun w/o drinking water to see when you'll pass out!! j/k

I used the argument re: damaging the fuel pump about a month ago and got flamed mercilessly.
