I have the Batmobile in my detail shop!
I just got this car into my shop today, it's just unreal. It's a real Batmobile built from the exact molds from the original production car. The car was recently repainted and needs to be completely wet sanded and buffed to a high gloss shine. Everything in the car works, and I mean everything including the flames that shoot 4 feet from the burner in the back.
There are so many switches, lights, and goodies on this car that ALL WORK exactly how the original car in the series did.
I got in touch with the owner, who has told me stories you wount believe through a guy I met just this past week at my shop. I thought he was joking when he told me it was a real Batmobile until it pulled up to my shop today. About 4 cars followed it off the highway into my parking lot, people got out just to get a closer look at this thing. The kids went nuts over it.
The pictures speak for themselves, I've taken quite a few with my old crappy camara so the resolution isn't the greatest. This will probably be the most outragious detail job anybody has ever taken on. I have a lot of work ahead of me, the paint has a lot of orange peal in it. My goal is to make this thing look like black glass.

Here's some history about the original car. http://www.1966batmobile.com/home.htm
The car I have is made from the molds that the original car was produced from. It's an exact replica of the original car, right down to the flame thrower in the rear.
that would def. turn heads at the Woodward Dream Cruise held in Aug. here in metro Detroit

8 hours later and I have the front end completely hand sanded and buffed. This car is so huge and has so many curves making it a real PITA to buff.
Here's how I'm doing it.
1) Wet sand by hand with 2000 grit paper. I'm sanding until it's completely flat, using a squeege to wipe the area I'm sanding to see that the surface is totally flat and dull with absolutely no orange peel.
2) Wet sanding again by maching, pneumatic Hutchens DA sander with 3M interface Hook it II soft pad with 3M 3000 grit disk. This cuts down the sand marks and leaves a semi smooth surface with a hint of gloss. This step makes the buff out really easy, you can also remove acid rain easily with 3000. The pads are very expensive, listing at almost 80 bucks for a package of 15, but it's definately worth it.
3) 3M Fast cut compound with a wool pad.
4) Repeat 3M Fast cut compound with a foam pad, here's where the high gloss shine comes through.
The last step I'll do once the whole car is finished. I use Presta Chroma Swirl Mark Remover with a black polish foam pad. The gloss achieved with this step is amazing and any buffer marks will be removed. Then a coat of hand applied wax will seal the shine.
I'll try to take some pics of the wet sanding steps and post them in a thread about wet sanding. For now, It's back to work on this giant car.

I don't know anything about car detailing besides wax on-wax off, but you're sanding it? Isn't that going to leave heavy scratches all over the car? I understand that it's not the sanding I'm thinking of, but please explain exactly what it is and how it's done, if its no trouble.
Interesting. My uncle used to do detailing on Rolls Royces and other high end cars. He is planning on getting back into the business and hes been talking about me being part of the business.
I was wondering if your shop is just a detail shop or is it also used for work. THe pictures of the batmobile show i giant shop. Is this your primary job or is it a part time side job? What type of products do you use? If you dont want to answer any of those question you dont have to. Could you PM me with details of your shop when you get a chance. It would be my full time job while i attend college and get a business/finance degree. After that I want to open my own shop. Sorry to ***** the thread with business stuff.
Keep up posted on the batmobile! would love pictures.

[QUOTE=Bluesbrekr]That'll be one heck of a detail job. IIRC the original car is assembled on a Pontiac platform from about 1959.
Why would you say the car was built on a Pontiac platform when he showed us a picture of the engine?
The Monkees car was built on a GTO chassis.
