Do I really need a resonator?

I have a bad leak in my exhaust right near the resonator. I have a complete 3" exhaust with a Dynomax "Super-Turbo" muffler, which is pretty quiet. How much of that is because of the resonator?

I'm thinking of replacing that section all together with basically a straight pipe...how much louder would that make the exhaust?

How big is the current resonator? A non resonated full 3" catback would be unbearable IMO for every day driving. I have the same setup full 3" including the y pipe with a 22" resonator into a Dynomax "Super-Turbo" muffler and its decently quiet, I just couldn't imagine it w/o the res.

i always thought that turbo cars are quiet and dont need resonators. cause im planing on running 3" straight pipe into a vibrant 3" to 3" muffler with no tip. muffler already has a slant cut on it. pretty stock looking.

ejj isn't turbo he's supercharged.

turbos do quiet a car down though.

come on man just chop it off if all else fails buy one and put it on if you cant stand the sound. who knows you might even like the sound you get.

i had a 3" catback with flowmaster delta muffler and it was pretty loud even for flow master's quietest muffler. I'm guessin u r trying to save money, but i think u should put a resonator on there. You will spend more money in the long run experimenting to see if its going to be too bad then replacing later versus doing it right now.

I have a 3" exhaust, no resonator, S/C.
Muffler is same as yours - Dynomax Super Turbo.
It's pretty quiet, relatively speaking.

You should be fine with a Turbo. I love the Dynomax on my S/C.

It was WAY louder when I had the 3" Magnaflow and louvered resonator on there....so maybe it's just that i come from a far worse situation. (GOD Magnaflows are LOUD!)

he is SC'ed the last time I checked. I have the same setup as you and a 22" res and I still think my car is fairly loud.

heh - you should have heard my Magnaflow setup then.

The Dynomax is about 1/4 as loud without the resonator.

Like I said - I guess it's all where you come from previously.

Ian, good info, thanks! I had the Magnaflow, and that was nuts. I went to the Dynomax as soon as I could after installing the Magnaflow.

I'm not looking to save cost, it would just be really easy to buy 3 or 4' of 3" pipe and weld a flange and O2 bung on there and be done with it. I could always re-use the resonator that's on the current exhaust, I was just wondering if its really necessary.

Eric, in my experience the resonator helped about 20%. On my '96 I had a WS Y, an RT cat and a custom cat-back made by a local muffler shop with a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler. It was too loud for me. I went back and he threw in a resonator. Like I said, it helped 20%. I say get one.

That is not necessarily true. The bigger the turbo, the less effect it has on noise. I'm running a relatively large turbo, 3" exhaust, 18" resonator, and straight through muffler, and if you ask anyone who has heard it, it's unholy. I'm about to replace the test pipe I have with a resonated version so I can run 2 resonators, hopefully that will help.

My wife's Integra is turbocharged but on a pretty small T3. It sounds much better now. Before, her car sounded like the typical Honda w/ an exhaust, kind of buzzy, raspy. But after the turbo install, it sounds very smooth, and deep. Nothing else on the exhaust changed.
