Put in a Stillen Hi-flow air filter.

I had read b4hand on various posts that it would sound different
[and glad I did too - would have thought I'd done something wrong].

So anyway, anybody w/ one of these will know what I'm talking about.
Under hard acceleration, in a certain rev-band,
the car now makes a lovely, throaty growl.
I'm driving harder more often just to hear the song.

My question [finally] is this:
what exactly am I hearing?

This piece is at the very start of the induction syst.
so I wouldn't think I was hearing noise coming out of the front
- but that seems to be where it is coming from.

So what is making the noise - valves or something?
And is it coming from the front or out of the exhaust?

TIA

Ok I am not sure if this is the reasoning, but it sounds like like the exhaust note has gotten a little louder. I know I have been next to my car as it pulled away and it does make this sound, although you can hear it inside the cabin normally. I think it is more prevalent in a 2K though.

I would think it would sound about the same
no matter what gen. Max the hi-flow filter was on.

This isn't a problem - in fact I really like the way it sounds.
I was only wondering what it actually is that I'm hearing...

The engine noise [or growl] is louder
- but only under hard acceleration
and even then, only within a portion of the rev band.
[Otherwise, engine noise sounds stock]

And, from the driver's seat anyway,
it sounds more like it comes from under the hood
than from the back of the car.

The sound comes through the intake. It is the sound of the combustion that is no longer muted by the stock airbox.

its the intake

because you have an aftermarket intake on now, you are no longer drawing air throug the stock one which has a resonation chamber. just like all cars. this is meant to silence the intake, cuz most people dont like loud cars. i removed the stock resonator on my civic before i started actually modding it, and had the same result. funny you should mention this, because i just took the resonator off my 96 max this afternoon... and lo-and-behold... the same thing... from about 2500-4500 it just plain roars... i love it. its a resonation thing....
