y-pipe is ruining my exhaust note

i installed my apexi ws2 today for $45. perfectly lined up w/ the cutout, not stickin out or anything. i expected it somewhat quiet but sounds like a v8 as joham said. worse part is, when i revved it, there was a raspy poping sound coming from the cat and y-pipe area. nearly spent 2hrs in the garage retighting some of the bolts, changing and switching out some of the gaskets.
well it did make an improvement but its not totally perfect. the front area is fine now but now i hear a little bit from the rear so i will check that out tomm.

* does the exhaust connector to the b-pipe use a gasket?
* are the nissan oem metal gaskets good to use?
* is anybody experiencing what i am?

1) if you mean where it connects to the muffler, yea on an oem exhaust it does.
2) there as good as any other new gasket

Yes there should be a gasket on every pipe that connects with another pipe. OEM gaskets are great to use.

WSP gaskets are crap. Mine leaked and cracked after the first day and started to make terrible noises from underneath the car. I switched it out and used the old OEM gaskets that was already on the car. The noise dissappeared instantly.

I never had any good luck with oem metal gaskets. They would always leak because the flanges are not totally flat so the metal gasket were not think enough to fill the uneven flanges. I will always use the thicker paper gasket never had a problem with them.

it totally sucks that the apexi ws2 doesnt sound good with an aftermarlet y-pipe.

I was hoping to get one, but i wanted to keep the noise at stock level.

G4 do you have a resonator on there? A resonator will help out with the popping and raspiness.

yeh, the b-pipe still has the resonator and as for the cat, i have a CM straight pipe w/ a built in resonator. well i tried to unscrew the exhaust connector to the b-pipe this morning but it was impossible. i had to hold the bolt as i tried to unscrew the nut but just couldn't do it.

yeh i know. i wish aftermarket sounded like stock but it actually ruins ur sound.
well i can tell u it sounds so much better now, much cleaner but like a v8, really.
kinda like a much louder deeper CAI sound. it would be perfect if i could just fix the rear section but oh well

i actually used the warpspeed gasket for the section behind the cat that connects to that small pipe connector and it helped out a lot. if i could, i actually would change out all the metal to the paper ones but dunno if anybody sell those

I've always heard that the Apexi ws2 with a after market Y-pipe sounded great. The quietest of the bunch. I guess it's personal preference. That's what I plan on putting on my car anyway.

On another note - Anyone know of a good place to grab a WS2 at a good price for a 99?

ebay. got mine for like $159, $25 shiping, $5 for insurance. get the NA 60mm/105 version. it will sound a whole lot quieter w/ a stock y-pipe but aftermarket will make it louder. i dunno, maybe its a warpspeed thing. oh, also heard CM has that prob to on vqpower:

Cons:

Slight rasp on deceleration WITH Straight-through design muffler.
Awkward position of 02 sensor on Catalytic*95-96*
Inability to use factory cat heat shield

Just checked ebay. I did find the rear section you mentioned, but I don't see the whole cat-back for the Max, which is what I'm looking for. Curses!!!

Ok i just spent 185.00 shipped for the w/s muffler and another 100.00 at the muffler shop to have it installed as a bolt on axle back in case i did not like it i could sell it. Well i drove home from the muffler shop (like 12 miles) And hated every mile. This thing is so loud, i thought they were pretty quiet? I should have known better it is a straight through. I tested it on my db meter when i got home and was hitting 119.5 dbs. That is the same as every other muffler i have had. ie; stillen muffler, dynomax super turbo, flowmaster 40. Now im out 285.00 just because i listened to people on here. Almost every aftermarket muffler is quiet with the factory y-pipe. Anyone want a bolt on axle-back????

its b/c u only have the muffler....the ws2 is a whole catback...so your forgetting to inculde the b pipe as well...which might be the noise problem yoru getting.

actually if he just had the muffler is shouldnt be as a loud as if he had the whole cat back. With muffler and restrictive stock 2.25 piping, shouldnt be that loud.

Yup, B-Pipe makes a HUGE difference.

Common knowledge is Y-Pipes don't work well with cat-backs on 4th gens.

Vid sounds good, but then you only revved up to about 1500 RPM.

My exhaust is raspy at idle FWIW. It's just plain nuts at WOT.
