Anywayz, if anyone of you could PLEASE help me with my questions; Id greatly appreciate it.

My 1998 GXE with 160k has been downshifting REALLY bad lately and sometimes any driving in the city under 40mph is kinda rough.

I got a CEL ; checked the code at autozone and it said :

P1444 auxilary emmision control

On the internet doing a google, it says:
Purge Volume Control Valve or
Canister Purge Volume Control Solenoid Valve

questions:

1. Can someone tell me what this means in brief?

ITS THE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM of a Maxima.

My problem or if anyone needs help and its possible causes are:
EVAP control system pressure sensor
EVAP cannister purge volume control valve(valve is stuck open)
EVAP canister purge control valve
Hoses(check to see if they are connected correctly)
EVAP canister vent control valve.

I have had this code (0214 = P1444) problem for two years. Here’s the weird thing - at the beginning the light would go off if my gas tank was less than 1/8 of the tank or if the temperature drops below 40 F. However this year it only goes off if the temperature is low?! I have been trying to fix it and my inspection date is fast approaching - last year I got lucky since the temperatures dropped low enough before my inspection date!

Work done on the car so far: 1) changed evap canister and valve (near gas tank); 2) changed evap canister purge control solenoid valve (under the hood); 3) changed vacuum switch; 4) checked lines for cracks, blockage, properly attached; 5) checked all fuses; 6) even changed the gas cap (the first thing I did)!

Does anyone have any suggestions - you don't know how happy I'll be to finally get this thing fixed...
