Broken Engine Crossmember....

I thought I broke and engine mount again a while back....but instead I broke the crossmember that supports the motor. Today was driving I notice some movement from my shifter....thinking this is the broken mount, I thought nothing of it. Well I drop my dad and baby brother off at the park, and notice my car suddenly scrapped, and I hadn't gone over anything. I thought to myself that's odd. So I go to do my errands when I notice that my shifter was extremely far ahead. So I get to my next destination, I go over a small bump and scrap again. Christ....so I get out of my car and look under my car. O_O my crossmember had fractured at the bottom and the top bent down. It sat about a few inches off the ground, and my oil pan was extremely low. So I pop the hood and I about screamed. The motor looked like it moved forward and then dropped. The A/C hardline is resting against the fan bracket. The motor has almost completely fallen out of the car.

So I nursed the car home, 3 miles doing 15-20 mph just babying it praying it doesn't get worst. Well I make it and park the car, grab my dad's truck and finished my rounds and picked my dad up. When I got home I took some pics, then inspected. It is fixable, but I'll need to replace the crossbeam, and it looks like I'll have to replace the front tranny mount, as well as probably drill out the bolts that looks like have broken off. Radiator is fine and full, motor still operates fine, but this undoubtingly mind boggling why this happened.

That's the thing, I didn't notice any rust on it. The car has been in washington state all it's life, there isn't a whole lot of salt out here. I was pretty shocked myself to see that.

thats scary!! I have been putting off changing my engine and tranny mounts for a while now. When I let off of the gas I can feel my shifter kicking back and fourth in the gear...I am assuming this is a sign of a mount being shot and the tranny is rocking when I come off of the accelerator. Goodluck with that...it looks like a pain. Anyone know a spot to pick up new mounts for a second gen? I was thinking about poly filling them, but it seems like that stuff really needs a long time to set up.

poly filling seems to be the best thing. It's a pain to find mounts for the 5-speed, and when you find them they are pretty damn expensive.

heh thats a funny sentance, what ever the solution is they use for the ice might as well be salt....granted this cross member may have been free of rust but tell my relatives the winter solution doesent cause any rust on their 1992 toyota corolla
