Uh, the projectors are designed with a certain bulb type that you should use. Also, just because you use a bulb that has a hi/low beam incorporated in it doesn't mean you'll get a hi/low beam pattern. That's why most cars with projectors have separate high beam lamps.

I think you would have had the best possible beam pattern using the projectors left the way they were, and incorporating some small round driving lights next to them in the housing to replace the high beams. Or alternately, using another set of projectors with the cut-off shield removed as highs. The bowl on the projectors is optimised for a specific type of bulb and filament orientation, and there are no projectors designed to use a dual filament bulb for high and low operation. You'll just get a screwed up beam pattern. The only projectors that do high and low accomplish it using a solenoid to move the cut-off shield out of the way, letting the projector illuminate higher but not brighter, which is fine because they use HID's.

Upgrading to HID's won't change the beam pattern, only make everything brighter. It is VERY important to have a proper beam pattern for the safety of other drivers, but also to make sure you get the most out of them. I'd say to get the type of bulbs designed for your projectors and add a separate high beam. A "driving light" would work fine, although most are technically for offroad use only (read: not SAE/DOT compliant).

Wylie, that's pretty much what I've been trying to say, but you say it better.

Number one way to improve your headlights is to rewire them to run off a relay hooked directly to the alternator or the battery. Mine were getting 11 volts before modding them, now they get 13.5. Big difference in output for a couple bucks and an hour of time. Second best mod to do to the stock headlights is switch to 9007 bulbs. They actually work quite well in our housings, and offer a bit better spread to the sides instead of that pathetic Mag-Lite kinda spot the 9004's give.
