Pops out of 6th gear!
Pops out of 6th gear!
HI,
Had to bring my SE 2004 6 sp manual transmission car to the dealership last week. Was driving down the highway (about 30,000 km or 18,000 miles on the car) and all of the sudden the stick shift would pop out of 6th gear. I had to physically hold the stick shift in 6th so I could drive the thing to the dealership.
They took the tranny apart. Apparantly the the problem is with the 6th gear synchronizer. Need a new part. It is on order.
I was wondering if any of the manual 6th speed have had similar problems.
Thanks,
Fireball

I just hit 37.5K miles and have had no problems at all with the 6-speed. It does not jump out of any gear. I changed the trans oil at 30 K miles and saw improvement in shifting by going to synthetic (Redline). Would recommend that you change at between 20 K and 25 K miles. Now that I have synthetic, I will change again at about 60 K.

Here is the thread on the Fluids and Lubs site here:
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=225766
Then scroll down the first post to the section on the 6 speed trannie called:
"How to change the manual transmission gear oil on all 6-speed 2002 and up Maximas:"
It gives the address of another site that provides detailed directions for changing your fluid. I can't successfully post that address here. This site also shows you photos to help identify the "plugs" to remove from your trannie and other important pictures -- it is very complete.
"Recommended Gear Oils include:
Amsoil 75W/90 Gear Oil
Redline MT-90
Please only use a GL-4 gear oil."
It lists some other fluids that are no longer available. There are a number of posts asking about different fluids. The most important point is to only use GL-4 gear oil, any other (higher or lower) can mess up you trannie.
Finally, check out my post #61 (first post on the 3rd page) on the Lubes section, where I give some added information based on my experience changing my 04 fluid. You don't need to read most of the other posts on that thread. Posts 63 and 65 cover the reintroduction of an Amisol gear oil that will work in our manual trannie.
