2005 Front struts replaced

My car was made on May 6th 2005. Today my wife went to change oil and I asked her to tell the dealer to check the struts.
Both front struts replaced. I thought they re-designed it, I guess not.

Question to all.. why haven't we all filled out the complaint on this on the nhtsa site??
I see where there were only 4 complaints regarding the skyview problem and that was turned into a recall mostly due to the injuries i am sure.. but the stut problem is something valid to have recalled on all Maximas at this point I think.... http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr...aintsearch.cfm ---- search for 2004 Maxima.

Click the FILE A COMPLAINT and start filling it all out!

Can anyone tell me the item numbers for the defective struts on the 04 Maxima and what the item numbers are for the good struts. I know that it was posted here quite a while ago but I cannot search the forums. My buyback lawsuit may depend on this. Thanks!

It's called a STICKY. others may have heard of them, ask around.

I'm not too alarmed about the 05 having the 04 strut. yeah it sucks and should have been resolved by then, but the redesign wasn't available until mid 05 production.

It doesn't matter what stock part # you have. It will only get replaced if it becomes defective. There is no recall, yet. So if you hear a hollow thud, ask to get both replaced.

What are the symptoms that would prompt someone to have the struts checked? My 2005 makes a pretty loud thump when crossing a bump such as a railroad track or a driveway entrance, but, I just figured it was the sport suspension.

That would be a pretty good reason to get them checked out. Also, after going over a bump they are clanking a couple of times then stop.
By the way new struts helped with understeer significantly.

Thanks for the info. I'll have the dealer take a look at them when I go in for next oil change...

Okay, once again people... why have we all not filed a complaint with the nhtsa on the website so this will become an actual recall!!! I mean.. be creative and explain how this can be potentialy dangerous and possably make someone lose control of there car. With all of you the STRUTS will be a warrented recall... Nissan needs to bite the bullett and fix everyones car correctly!!!! Time and money... can't buy time and in time you lose money. Gas is getting too expensive to keep making trips to the stealership.

Struts changed - drone - alignment

I had my 04 struts replaced about 2 months ago. I have read elsewhere in this forumn that the front end does not have to be re-aligned when the struts are changed. Since the new struts, I have noticed two issues.
1. The steering wheel does not set centered when driving straight down the road. I have probably 2500 miles since the strut change and have not been on a road yet where the wheel sets straight; so I do not think it is just the road.
2. I have noticed a drone sound coming from the front wheel area. This will be hard to explain. It happens between 58 and 70 mph. It has the same tone at all speeds and does not change when letting off the gas. The sound is almost like the sound of the tires of a tractor trailer that is 150 feet ahead of you while driving down the road. It also happens on all road surfaces. I have been hesitant to explain the problem to the dealer but it is an annoying sound.
Has anyone else experienced the drone?

I filed one a looooong time ago and requested people with bad struts to do the same. There are a handful of complaints on the NHTSA site. Nissan is sweeping this problem under the rug.

Struts replaced today...

I had my 04 SL struts replaced today with the new ones with the part number that ends in a 6. The ride over bumps and holes is way better, no thumping and the frontend feels tighter while going over bumps. Before it always felt like something was loose in the linkage when hitting a bump, especially when turning up my driveway. I take my driveway bump at about .0005 MPH and it always felt loose, today it felt.... well..... like my old 02 Acura TL.

I had the tires Road forced balanced too. The readings are now 6 and 8 on the front and 21's on the rear.

Still has a shimmy...... although the ride has improved.

I would say you need to get an alignment done. The steering wheel should be straight and that droning could possibly be due to your tires not coming into contact with the road as they should.

Im a little confused even if they replace them... Are they using different struts or the same ones that come stock?

If its the same ones isnt it a never ending cycle UNTIL your warrenty runs out?

good luck getting a straight answer. It has been implied that Nissan has "corrected" the issue. IMHO Nissan has not. The struts ending in 6 seem to hold up better, but are noisy. Nissan tries to hide the noise through a TSB that can be found through the stickies. I guess it comes down to a tolerance of the noise. If your struts are clunking around during small bumps then they really need to be replaced. If the clunk over "extreme" conditions like speed bumps, driveway curbs, RR track, etc then the dealer will say NPF and send you on your merry way. If you have changed your struts three times see my sticky on the lemon law and decide if you want to take legal action. Legal action will be the only way to get this never ending cycle to stop, MAYBE.

What makes me want to cry is the fact that Nissan knows about this issue. 60% of SE owners have this issue and yet there is no TSB. This is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen IMHO.

Only time will tell what Nissan decides to do about the noisy struts and other QC issues.
