I've got a whining from my clutch when I'm engaging it from a standing start, and some chatter occasionally. The whine seems to be more pronounced when it is hot out. '97 with 72k miles.

Is this an indication I need the friction plates/other components replaced. If so is there any aftermarket pieces I should look at or stick with the stock parts.

thanks

You have Maxima Clutch Groan. MCG is heard only when the clutch is engaging. It sounds somewhat like a cow mooing. A cow with a sore throat. MCG is an unlovely characteristic, but not a symptom of a defect.

My '99 GXE (25K miles, bought new, gently driven) has MCG and occasional chatter. I regard the clutch as a low point in an otherwise fine car. If this clutch ever wears out I will not replace it with Nissan factory parts.
