I have a 96 Maxima w/ the Bose CD. When I put a CD in it, nothing happens and it says "error" on the display. When you turn the volume up you can hear a whining noise. I know its not the motor because the unit will take and give back the CD. I think the laser might be off. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem and if they know of a easy solution, or if I need to take it to the dealer or specialist.

if its only CDRs, then it may be ok...if its with everything, something is definately wrong. if it comes down to having to get a new one, just go to a junkyard website and get yourself a new headunit for really cheap. that should solve it quickly, cheaply and easily. Otherwise, it could be just a dirty laser (had this happen on a home stereo...a simple clean with a Q-tip and isopropyl alcohol did the trick).

 

Yeah at first I thought its was only burned CD's but then I tried regular ones. I figured I'd have to get a new head unit but thought I might at least see if it was fixable. Thanks though for your help.

i have the same problem, in extreme weather, but if you check the owner's manual it says humidity can cause that and sometimes you have to wait an hour before it will play. i have an rx7 and its manual says the same thing.

 

I had the same problem. I didn't want to waste money fixing it so I decided to try fixing it myself. I took out my dash and pulled my stereo out. I disassembled the top part of the cd player to see what was the problem and while it was apart I put the power plug back on. The problem was that the motor wasn't spinning the CD. I gave it a push and it started working.

I always thought that the motor was working...because when I stuck the cd in, I heard the sound of a motor. After taking out the cd player, I noticed that the motor for the laser eye was working, but the motor for spinning the cd wasn't.

However after a few days, it stopped working again. I didn't want to take the cd player and the dash apart, so now I just take a piece of hard paper and fold it up. Then I stick it in the bose cd player and "feel" for the cd and give it a push, and miraculously there's music again. Hope this helps
