Over the last month my car has been getting pretty poor gas mileage.

I just filled up after the light had turned on. I had gotten 222 miles on the tank. When I filled up it took 15.3 gallons to fill her up.

The computer says I am average 22 miles per hour and it says I averaged 18.3 miles per gallon, I actually got 14.5.

I use 93 fuel and don’t drive her hard or anything.

Is this an MAF problem? I don’t notice any poor acceleration or anything like that.

Another thing I noticed is after I fill up it used to say the distance to empty was 350 or more, now it is always 300.

 

i use to get that when i first got this car...well maybe not that bad but it was under 300miles per tank...i got a tune up on the car and after that it got better mileage...i get over 320miles per tank now.

 

My car is about to hit 36000 miles and it is only a 02.

So a tuneup will do it?

 

I haven't had this problem on my max but on my old truck, i had the smae issue and all it turned out to be was i needed a new air filter.

 

i have a 2k max with 133k miles. last week i got 23 mpg mostly city driving with a few 5 min highway drives. the week before that i got 27 mpg with i would say close to 50/50 city/highway

 

my car was about the same and all i did was change the air filter and put in a K&N filter in it got better gas milage

 

due a tune up the whole ten yards... and do a Sea Foam treatment... you are done..... good luck

When you guys say "tune up," what exactly does that include?

 

try driving like an old fart!

 

check tire pressure too. I get about 24mpg or so and have 35lbs all around

 

also you could have a fowling catalytic converter. But check that last. Id do what they say, get a tune up, sea foam it, check air filter and possibly check the fuel filter.

 

do the easiest quickest, cheapest things first. Air filter and tire pressure. Make sure your tires aren't low and make sure your air filter isnt really dirty. If it hasn't been replaced yet, than most likely it will need to be. I change mine out every 8K miles. Your car doesn't really have enough miles to need a tune up yet. Let us know if these things help.

 

I see you live in Texas & this is a common problem on the east coast for 00 -01 Max. I get the same thing your getting ever since I bought the car. At best 230 street driving maybe 280 all highway. My car could not be better maintained. So that is not your issue unless your tires are really off & your airfilter is 2 years old. The issue is your foot if you drive it like your grandma you will see a considerable difference. But if you like to hear it growl well then expect 230 a tank. My 2 cents.

 

yeah dude, there can be so many variables in determining how many miles you get on a fill up. I read in the newspaper somewhere, tire pressure and the extra weight on the car plays a big factor. for every 100 lbs that you add in your car, you lose about 1%-2% of the mpg you get. (from the boston globe a week ago) Make sure your tire pressures are right. Make sure your air filter is clean. People often use BG44K or Seafoam to clean their injectors on every tune-up. Dont be revving it like you are in the 2 fast 2 furiour movie. () etc.. etc....

i just started working away from boston and my mileage improved because i drive mostly on highways than bumpy boston streets.

 

Yeah call me stupid but what is tune-up? (AIR filter change, spark plugs, seafoam treatment(directly in cyl and thru brake hose), tire pressure rised to 35 all around) But f**k it still get 16-18mpg even with few runs on highway. Guys what else could be a problem?
BTW i did drive like old fart not more than 2000rpms and ave in city speed 45mph

P.S. I used to have cone K&N filter. Low end torque loss but like 5-10 miles more on 1/4 of the tank.
