Manual tranny….oil…

I am changing manual tranny oil in my car. Neither, me nor my mechanic do not know how to drain the fluid. Stealership wants $128 for that. I’d appreciate if someone can explain how it can be done. Maybe I’m blind but I cant find this info in stickies

Also is there any other lubricant that could be used? How much better is it? Do I have to flush it or I can just drain it and fill it up?

if your mechanic doesn't know how to change your gear oil, get a new mechanic.

The drain plug in your car is actually partially blocked by the shifter linkages. It's towards the back(rear) of the tranny on the right side looking up a it.

Your mechanic doesn't know how to put new fluid in the tranny? That's quite weird, there are only two plugs on the tranny, drain and fill. What does he do on your car? Just engine oil changes?

Go with straight dino gear oil and make sure its GL4, not GL5 or a GL4/5 blend, or you'll ruin your transmission bushings. Use 80w90 or 75w90. I got mine replaced in February at Mr. Lube and it cost less than an oil change. I wouldn't bother replacing it myself or paying a mechanic for what it costs at a lube joint. I think the jury is out on using Redline gear oil. I question the benefit of using synthetic gear oil in a manual transmission.

Could you be specific what is Dino gear oil? I can't find anything around here that is GL-4 except for Redline.

Dave B told me that some stealers have this non synthetic oil for tranny, specifically for 5speeds.

But since I will have to do it myself, I need to buy it in quarts.

I just changed mine with 80-90 gl4 from o'riley and it shifts awesome. It feels much much smoother than before. Im pretty sure it had gl-5 in it. I had to replace a cv seal so i figured i would drain it all (via gear sensor) and change it. The gl4 is super cheap too. I bought a gallon and 1 quart for about 15 bucks. Can't beat it. Good luck.

By dino gear oil I mean just regular gear oil. Don't bother with synthetic. However, you MUST use GL4. Go to a lube joint as they will have it. I couldn't be bothered changing it myself. I paid Cdn$34.19 including all taxes at Mr. Lube. For US$25 to $30 why be bothered with the mess and disposal problem.

Those write-ups suggest to tighten the plugs to the specific amount of torque. Does it mean that I have to use the torque wrench to do that?

you're supposed to tighten the oil drain plug to a specific torque, too :-)

you need a torque wrench, or access to one, to work on your car. period. in a lot of cases, as long as you're close, it won't make a huge difference, but don't risk it. just do it right the first time.

fsm says 22-29 ft-lbs... probably to keep from crushing the drain plug washer. or if you go really crazy, the oil pan itself :-0

how much do you think it should be? It's Staten Island Nissan. The girl was like "just a sec" and then she comes back and tells me that it's $128 it's a manual tranny though.

btw:I PMed you on some different topic just now, thought you might have not noticed that you got a new pm lol
