Power Window Repair?

I was rolling up the passenger side window yesterday and it suddenly made a cracking sound and then the window would not go up and slid all the way down. Today I took off the door panel to see what the problem was and found that the plastic piece attached to a metal piece that slides up and down on the rail was shattered. There's a cylinder that is attached to the cable that pushes up on this plastic piece to make the window go up or down.

So, I unbolted the rail from the door, but I haven't been able to figure out how the cable can be removed from the rail assembly. It goes through the piece that moves up and down but there doesn't seem to be enough clearance to get the cable out. Can you not just replace the rail assembly? Does the whole motor and rail assembly have to be replaced as a unit? The motor works great.

Check the stickies at the top.

You have a broken regulator, unbolt both reg. and motor then remove the motor put motor on new regulator.

Once those regulators get fouled up, you just need to replace them. It's a very common problem with the 3rd gens.

You can buy the regulator from Internetautomar (t) and it installs pretty easy. Look in the stickies if you need detailed instructions. It sounds like you got it figured out so far.

Thanks for the replies. Just figured out myself that you can get just the regulator portion without the motor. Found one online for about $35. Internetautomar would be a good source too I'm sure.

I also remember reading somewhere that the regulator should be purchased from the dealer since it's new and improved, because the aftermarket keeps it crappy and it will go bad soon enough anyway. Is this true? I called the dealer and it was like almost $90 for one regulator

I have one from the dealer. $78. I don't know about the quality of the aftermarket. I would imagine they are of similare quality.

Don't know how much better the Nissan "improved" ones are, or if they are even better. Courtesy has those for $60 though. I got one made by Dorman. I'd say as long as you get a brand new one that's not old and brittle you should be set. If the new one lasts as long as the old one I'll be more than happy.

Answer ..... and a question

As you figured out all you need is a regulator. The motor transfer over. I just bought 2 from Castrucci Nissan, for aunder 60$ each.

But .....

New regulator installed but the window runs very slow and won't reach the top. The motor and regulator work fine (I pulled it out of the window to check) so I cant see any problem other than accumluted dirt in the run channel and on the sections of the window that go in the run channel. What I want to do is remove the run channel and the window, clean both and reinstall. Does anyone have a procedure for this?

Tx

Not really. I think you gotta take it to a pro. How is it that dirt already accumluted in the new regulator? Has it worked improperlly from day one?

the channels that the window runs in the edges can get misaligned, loosen the window on the regulator and see if you can adjust it a bit.

i made the repair about a week ago and had the same issue. like internetautomar suggested, loosen the regulator so it has a little wiggle room and then roll up the window, as it goes up, it'll move the regulator into position so you can tighten it up.

you could also try something graphie in the window track to reduce the friction, but if a slow window wasn't a problem before the regulator swap then it shouldn't be an issue now.

Thanks for this and other replies. It was a combination of dirt in the channel and also the channel being ever so slightly misalligned. Loose the bolts, let the window move the channel to where it wants it and tighten again.

This is the third regulator I've replaced in 6 months. Not Nissan's best work here.

what you are describing is the window regulator. Check previous posts in this thread for places to buy them. What kind of exhaust do you have?

I've had window problems on my 91 gxe. Right now i'm down to 1 working window. The rear two regulators went bad and the front passenger window will roll down but not up. I figured out that there is no power going from the switch to the motor when it is pressed up from either the drivers or passenger side. Does anyone know if this means that the drivers side switch is bad or the passenger one? And is there anywhere that u can buy a left rear window motor and regulator for fairly cheap that is brand new?

The ones from the dealer replace much of the plastic that cracks with metal. I've replaced all four now with dealer parts (Courtesy is probably the same part) and all had the redesigned regulator. You know the original was a bad design when the dealer always has replacements in stock.

Unclip the window motor wiring harness...There are 3 10mm bolts on the window motor...take them out..Then there are four 10mm bolts holding the regulator in, about in the middle of the door,2 on the top of the door ,2 on the bottom of the door, take them out....

Viola!

Sorry no pics....i'm at work..
