Factory paint problems? Chips after 1,500 miles.
Factory paint problems? Chips after 1,500 miles.
@#$%!! My new black Max has only 1,500 miles on it, but already several small chips in the hood, down to the primer! At this rate, the hood will look sandblasted within a year. This is from a normal blend of city/highway driving. I didn't hear any giant pebbles bouncing across the hood while driving, and the car is garaged at night.
Anyone else have problems with the factory paint job? Does it seem too soft or non-resistant to you? Any ideas for protection against future chips?

forget the clear bra, you'll just have hald a chipped hood then. I complained to 2 dealers and called Nissan. "Nissan won't warrant chips." believe me, I tried. One service manager even said "Looks like wax in the chips to me."
I revisited him to tell him
I washed it, and messed with it. Only thing under the white primer is Aluminum. He goes, "well I thought it was wax. Either way, Nissan won't warrant it."
So I touched up the bad ones (looks like crap, but better then white. Just gonna use better paint on it when I also get my Redmax kit someday.
oh yeah, I research the org and found ever since start of 5th gen, this has been Nissan's trademark. Great motors, cheap paint. I suppose it's better then the opposite.

I just talked to a certified 3M applicator for their clear film paint protection. He said the new "environmentally friendly" paints are softer than the old ones. I asked him if he could just cover my whole hood. He's going to check to see if he still has a chunk of 4 foot film. Pretty expensive to have it applied. Might be a lot cheaper to find a polymer car sealant that dries black.
at 31k miles, I have no visible chips on the front.
I used to tailgate trailers if they're slow on passing lane with my previous cars, and it gave the cars lotta chips on the front.
now i don't tailgate, and I have no rock chips.

oh yeah, Tilley educated me on the cause of chips. (certainly tailgating is involved but...)
"I can always tell how fast someone drives but the amount of chipping on the front. Faster you go, faster it chips."
We should relay this to Nissan.
>>>>Either make better high speed paint, or make slower cars. Which do you think will sell better?<<<<<
I still feel if they use more than a nano-meter thickness with a flex agent and more clearcoat, we'd be golden. No one's chips show like Onyx, it has a white primer for crying out loud.
Of course our Aussie friend touched a possibilty: "I wonder if Nissan knows that Aluminum requires a different paint process."
Also true about above statement (Tax). Once lead was taken out, so was paint's toughness.

Black and chipped all over. I've been hit by road debris of rubber from blown out tires, rocks, a piece of roofing shingle and other crap that has my hood freckled like Lindsy Lohan. One piece of crap that hit me not only scratched the hood but then hit off the front windshield and put a chip in that too. Luckily our hood is aluminum so the chipped spots won't turn to rust spots in the future. I gotta get out the ol' touch up paint and try to make it look a little better.
I was driving in the fast lane about 500 feet from the nearest car in front of me and out of nowhere it starts raining road crap all over me and I don't know where its coming from. I'm like, WTF as I'm slowing down and scanning to see where this **** is coming from. There was this pickup truck that had dried mud and rocks all over it driving down the highway in the fast lane just spraying everybody with his ****. I had to drop way back to avoid all of his crap and all I could do was wave my
at him as he exited the highway.
Some people deserved to be shot.

I have chips all over the front bumper...(ya gotta get up to see it though...and its particulary bad in direct sunlight) I can live with it....because I know its just the bumper and it can be repainted...but then I think to myself, its only gonna happen again so I should get a clearbra...but then I think hey by then I will want a new car anyway so who cares....ahhh just drive it...40k and my car still looks beautiful if you arent up close scrutinizing it. Ill probably do a bumper repaint in the summer though...because thats thankfully where they all are.
Chips Ahoy!
It seems to me that my 2005 Maxima chips more easily than other vehicles I have had. The front hamburger, front bumper, and leading edge of the hood are pretty marked-up (approx. 22,000 miles). I've wondered if Nissan finishes are not as tough as other finishes (my maxima is the first Nissan I've owned).

Chip Ahoy II
Actually, my bumper has held up extremely well for an 04 purchased back in November of 2003 with 18+K miles. Now the lower front hood is a diffent story, not a whole hell of a lot, but enough to where it bothers me...
