My first track session ever - 14.814s @ 94.55mph - '98 5-speed GXE

I managed to finally make it to a dragway for the first time in the the 2.5 years of owning this car.

My best run for the day was as follows:
1/4 et - 14.814s
trap - 94.55 mph
60ft - 2.236s

My best trap of the day: 96.38mph

My clutch was basically dead after my 2nd run, and was slipping very bad especially on the 1-2 shift (couldnt even chirp 1-2). Additionally I could not even do a burnout because the clutch would slip, and had to launch from idle. Also I was using really crappy economy all seasons w/ 50% tread left.

Go fast mods include:
Mazda Millenia wheels for the front
Budget Y Pipe
Budget B Pipe
Frankencar Intake w/ K&N Cone

A lot of the more experienced track guys such as speedemn and DandyMax said that the track was among the worst that they have been too...so with a new clutch, better tires and a better track I am confident that the car will be capable of mid 14s runs.

yeah with 96mph traps you could pull off a 14.3 if you can really drive. 14.4-14.5 more likely though.

Nice traps, fix your clutch.

Do you guys think that by switching the rear wheels to lighter wheels it should improve my times? I remember reading threads back in the day on the .org that people ran identical between different wheel masses in the rear.

Don't bother with the rears. All it will do is make your car a little lighter, the rotational mass rule doesn't apply to wheels not being spun by the engine. Those wheels are just being dragged along like the CD case in your car, etc.

hmm i dont think i could reach those times even tho i trap 95-96mph
is there something wrong with those times then?
60ft - 2.08
1/8 - 9.46
1/4 - 14.77 @ 95.40mph
(the run i did that is in my sig)

would it be possible to get 14.5 with 15in or 16in wheels?
the only difference with his car and mine is i got a fully loaded SE
and using 17in on the 4 wheels (225/45/17)

Those times look to me like you're shifting really slow (or slow in comparison to some people). 2.08 is an incredible 60' time, far better than I've ever pulled, but when I trap 95+ I've been known to run 14.4... you're probably wasting too much time off the gas shifting when you could be accelerating. If I were to ever cut a 2.08 60' time in my stock max, I could've run a high 14.3x or low 14.4x. It went 14.51 @ 94.5 stock with a 2.16 60'.

Refresh my memory... what was your race weight again for that run Neal? And you were powershifting too right?

3060lbs. I don't remember if I powershifted on that run or not, I'm sure I probably did. I powershift my NA cars when I remember, but sometimes I forget. I have to actively think about powershifting because it's not something I do "naturally." Often I forget to powershift the 1-2 shift but then as I'm winding out 2nd gear I remember and then powershift 2-3 and 3-4.

I didn't powershift my old 96 on the 1-2 shift on purpose because it just resulted in too much wheelspin. With a stock max though it doesn't result in much spin so it's not a problem to powershift 1-2.

That's inlcuding driver (you) right?

Yikes... 300 lbs lighter than my stock SE weight. I really should think about weight reduction... Even modded I'm still heavy at around 3250 (incl me) and it hurts me I'm sure. Problem is I like the luxuries for everyday use on the street... I can't quite decide how far to go with the performance vs luxury; I'm very ambivalent about it right now...

I'm an idiot. I just looked up the post I made about that track day and it was 3102 with me in it and with a full tank. I don't know where the 3060 figure popped into my head from. There was no weight reduction done on the runs we're talking about except the spare tire, but the full tank of gas adds more weight than the tire takes away.

well i dont understand.. i powershift every gear!
i think i was shifting like this:
1-2 gear 6500rpm
2-3 gear 6300rpm
3-4 gear 6100rpm

i also tried keeping 3rd

so im guessing maybe the track doesnt show my real trap speed..
or i dont know..

check the video in my sig maybe you will see something

EDIT: erm the sig doesnt show up.. you can check it up there in the thread

Lol I wasn't about to lay down serious money for slicks or DR's. I wonder how a set of Z-rated summer tires will help my 60 fts.

I'm running Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s in 225/45/17 and can't hook up when I drop the clutch at 3K. In my opinion, they're better than all seasons but nothing like DRs.

You should try launching from idle like I did.

Using street tires I'd try slip launching somewhere from 1500 to 2500 or so rather than dropping the clutch (unless you find you're getting enough traction) ... it is harder to do well consistently though.

Good times Phil... what were your 60' times like? I remember running at St. Thomas with the same mods as you and I think I ran a 14.7 @ almost 97mph. That was on my street tires - Firestones at the time. I think your time, for that track is good, based on your trap speed. But then again that track is known to have weird trap speed readings depending on which lane you run in.

st0rm82, that is an awesome 60' time! I cannot manage much better than that (at this one particular track) with my slicks!!! 2.07 was my best last week with kingrukus. You should try to run at a different track and see what kind of ETs and traps you can get with similar 60' times.

Hmm I could really only hear your first shift st0rm, because after that that ricey integra with the hood scoop's buzzing noise took over, but the first shift didn't sound slow to me at all. Maybe that track just runs a little slow. With my old maxima there was a track I went to occasionally that I would consistently trap 2mph slower in similar weather conditions. I'd run the same times but my traps would be 2mph slower, both when I was stock and modded.

thanks for the info!
ya well my other shift were about the same (powershift, not hitting rev limiter either)
next week if the weather is nice i will go
to another track (the track where JClaw usually goes i think)
i dont know if i will remove my sound system this time tho
as i got 300km to drive to go there...

since that run i changed all my o2 sensor (had a CEL and was running
rich i think.. black smoke..)
im happy with 14.7 but if i can do 14.5 or .6 ill be very happy!

for the 2.08 i was kinda surprised to run that after i got my new tires!
(did run 2.35 with my badly worn tires)
i did alot of 2.1x that day also, pressure was 24psi to eliminate all wheelhop
and i did small burnouts to warm them up a little
on that run i did fastslip@4000rpm !! and it hooked good!
