Hard-Wired OBD ???

Would love to see pictures if somebody has hardwired an onboard diagnostics reader into their dash or center console or something so that you can pull codes as soon as the SES light appears.

Why don't you put it in your (Insert:trunk/glovebox/armrest) and use it when you need it? Thats whats cool about it storing the code.

And even if you do mount it on your dash and get the code immediatly. What would you even want it for?

didnt mean to upset anyone haha. i guess you coouuuuuulllldddddd just hook it up whenever you need it. or you could be lazy like me. im just looking for a clever place to hook one up. i was thinkin about under the dash, passenger side, and maybe make the cord retractable so i can just pull it out from wherever its mounted? i dunno im just looking for ideas...

this is a really easy thing to do, its not like im complicating things that bad is it?

Doesnt sound lazy to me. Just doesnt make sense.

If you want to be "lazy" you could splice into the harness just above the port under the dash and connect that to the scanner. Run the scanner into the secondary armrest tray and keep it there. If it is thin enough. My sirius radio is mounted in there so there is some space. Or run it into the glove box.

That way it all looks stock, with no large stupid box attached to the dash.

I arranged mine so it goes into a DB9 port I installed in one of the spare plastic trim pieces (one of the 'blanks' where the TCS button might've gone on an automatic, for instance) is there at all times. I have a Palm PDA mount just above it and an RS232 cable that I have wrapped up and tied to shorten the slack. I don't use it often though, but it is kinda cool

thanks for the input. yea the idea i had in my head was under the dash or somewhere on/in the console, not necessarily staring you in the face but accessible somehow.

hey sometimes its ok to have a pointless mod right?

if i saw that i would think that the vehicle has a lot of problems... i mean, if you need to hardwire a code reader... lol

its too easy just to pull them at the next stoplight.

I keep mine attached all the time which is through a Zire 71 Palm. I just like to monitor the coolant temp and timing advance the rest is just nice to have. Its not hard wired I just don't disconnect it.

sweet. this is another option im looking at. I have a Samsung i700 Pocket PC Phone and i am also considering this route since I already have the cradle mounted on the console.
