bad morning - $850 bill at stealership

so i dropped my car off at the stealership last night to get a 4-wheel alignment and to have a weird squeaking checked out. a guy from their service department calls me this morning and says that my car is "too low to align." he also tells me that my ebrake is "frozen," that my rear pads are completely gone, my front pads have 5% left on them, and that all 4 rotors are warped. he said that they could fix all this for the great price of $850. so for that price i'm getting all 4 rotors resurfaced, all new brake pads, and the ebrake problem fixed. when i asked about the squeaking, he said that it was probably brake related and that this service should fix it. ok....now i know i'm getting ripped off, but by how much?? i could have bought new pads and rotors online for about $400 shipped....

Yep. Just going thru the same heahache with the MAF. Dealer wants $650 CDN and I can get it from DaveB for $100 US. Even after shipping and currency conversion it still a WAY better deal.

Did you already authorize them to do the work? If so, why does it matter how much you are overpaying. I'd rather not know....

i got both front brembo rotors for 82 shipped and front pads for 65 shipped. essentially double that and it would have run less than 300 shipped for 4 rotors and pads.

Do not authorize the work to start. If you are not capable of doing the work yourself, take it to a reputable brake shop. Perhaps you can provide your own parts and negotiate a deal on labor.

I went that route and replaced my rear calipers with rebuilt calipers, got new Raybestos brake pads installed and had the rear brakes cleaned and bled for Cdn$400. The stealership would have charged over Cdn$1,000.

wow, any shop can resurface rotors for about $20 a pop. the pads are around$60-80 for all 4. i am not sure how to tighten the e-brake cable myself, but im sure it can't be that hard. any shop can prolly do it for 1/2 hour labor, if anything. wtf are you doing paying THE STEALERSHIP for simple DIY maintanance repairs. changing the pads is about as easy as changing a spare tire. rotors are more involved, but nothing you can't handle with a ratchet and a few hours of your time.

i didn't send my car in to have the brake pads changed, c'mon...i'm not that helpless. but when they called me this morning, they made it sound like my car might not stop again. maybe i'm just a sucker, but it didn't sound like i could wait the week or so shipping time to get everything. and oh yea, changing pads/rotors in a college parking lot in the rain would have been a blast too.

Well then, DIY
Find a place where you can do them. The rain is supposed to stop by tomorrow.

Getting any work done at the dealer, save warranty work = buyer's remorse.

Sorry for your loss, buddy. At least you've learned your lesson; once your warranty is up, find a different shop.

Bad morning??

Bad morning is the understatement of the day. You took it in the A$$ bone dry no lube!! Four brand new brembo rotors & metal master pads installed for half that amount. Should have went Group buy + local shop for install. Or done it yourself.

its not rape when you consent...

you should have declined the work... in fact, i would have gone down to the dealer, asked them to SHOW ME THE RUNOUT on that ****.

and the pads. if he didnt already have a mic on the rotor, i would have declined.

besides, pads ($65ish per pair, even at the dealer) plus 4 hours labor doesnt come out to $800.

and joeyd, i would explain the alignment process to you but i dont think it'd make a difference.

you can search for 'align' posts by me.

How did it come to $800.00? Did they replace e-brake cables as well?
Nissan parts don't seem higher than other imports vehicles, and the dealership should be following industry standard flat rate times for labor.
If they didn't, this doesn't have to end here.
I am a tech at a dealership, and can't believe the price you paid.
There must be more to it than replace pads, and machine rotors.

Kinda OT, but are you sure for US$100 you are getting a brand spanking new MAF? That's a price for a used one.

you obviously don't know who DaveB is.....else you wouldn't ask that question. And oh, by the way, my NEW MAF cost me $88.

As to this other guy....jeez. Everything that the dealer is "doing" is BS. They are taking advantage of someone who doesn't know better (you).....
1.if your front and rear pads were actually that low, you would hear a LOUD grinding from the pad indicators (which grind when they get down to like 15% or so).
2. The REAR rotors have never had warping problems on the maxima, at least not that I've ever heard of, unless you're doing e-brake slides. How did they check them anyways? You can't tell a warped rotor just by looking.
3. ALWAYS ASK TO SEE. Make them show you that your pads are gone. Make them show you how the rotors are warped. Make them show you that your ebrake is seized....
4. Never go to the dealer unless it's warranty work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You walked into the dealer without a plan and let them rape you. You should have said "do the alignment like I said and I'll take care of the rest of the so-called problems, ok?" It sucks that this happened, but you need to stand up and call bullsheet on them.....they're there to make money, not to "hook you up" and they make the most money off the most ignorant customers....

BTW, alignment can be done no matter how "slammed" your car is.

Bro, this isn't Peters Nissan by any chance is it? They're allright, as much as any dealership can be. I had the same problem with a frozen ebrake and they charged me 180 for labor to replace the two cables, which I brought to them. If they are replacing both ebrake cables, there's your 400 between parts and labor. This thing was a pain to try to replace especially since I dont have a garage or lift so I was happy to pay labor for it although I still had that "i'm getting bent over the barrel" feeling. But yeah, you're right, for the extra 400 you could have gotten a whole set of pads and rotors. If you have the time, check the N.E forum, there's a bunch of people who can help with this, for much less if you're not sure how to do it.

I sleep fine, it's not us, its the company policies.

Guess what, its a job right ???

Considering the "talk" I get from members I think we deserve a break, especially for those members who are "cool" with Nissan "stealership" employees.

Its funny cause my dealership charges 240 dollars just to CUT the rotors- per AXLE. I know quite a few shabby mechanics in my shop that will say you have ZERO pad left, yet there is still quite a bit of it left. 4 wheel brake job is 700 bux at my place, and I do them on cars all the time- when needed ofcourse. We get 4.8 hours to do all 4 rotor cut, and install new pads with hardware, another 1.5 for a aligment and if you just happen to come in for a 60K service another 4.0 hours. If you got a good brake lathe, know how to hustle you can perform all the above mentioned work in less than 3 hours, yet you get paid grand total of 10.3 hours for that whole job. If its a TL or CL it most likely needs a tranny too, so add on another 6.2 hours for that, it takes bout 2 hours Max to do, or hour if you are fast and you can go home at lunch with 16.5 hours for the day. We get paid PER hour sold on a job, so weeks of 70-90 hours are not unheard of at my place times that over 20-30 dollars a hour (depending on what U make) and thats your paycheck. I usually charge 450 dollars for a 60K with 4 wheel brakes including all the parts on a Max, on the side.

Order powerslots online + pads and junk.

100 dollars + and hour X 2

About half of what you paid.

For the ebrake - just leave it in first.

ok, thanks to everybody who told me i'm an idiot, but the point had been made, so....stop.

next, no, my car IS too low for some shops to align. my bumper is less than 2" off the ground, so driving up onto any kind of alignment machine is next to impossible. the shop where i did get the alignment done TOOK APART THE FRONT OF THE MACHINE in order to get my car onto the alignment rack.

finally, i knew my brakes were in BAD shape. they didn't just make up the problem. i just didn't know they were that bad. yes, i could have bought new pads and rotors online, waited a week or so to get them, then sat in a parking lot at my college in the rain without any tools and install them, but.....that didn't seem so appealing. i got out of the stealership for $673...the ebrake problem was able to be fixed without swapping out as many parts as they thought. and because i *****ed that i couldn't spend this much money right now, they dropped some of the labor charges. but of course after leaving there, i spent $100 on an alignment/balance and another $40 on a state inspection.

Of course I know who DAVEB is. I've been here since 2000. I know we can get parts through him; I just never knew he sold brand new MAFs for less than $100. Great deal.
