Higher Idle after TB Cleaning
Higher Idle after TB Cleaning
I went to an opening special at a new Lubeworld yesterday and had a new fuel filter installed. I told the guy that I had to remove the fuel pump fuse and he said not to bother. He said just take the gas cap off and that would relieve the pressure. Although he struggled somewhat in getting the hoses off, gas did not shoot all over the place. He used a Kralinator fuel filter which appeared to be somewhat larger than the Nissan OEM filter that it replaced.
Rather than remove the FSTB, he removed the stock air box and hose leading into the throttle body. While he was it he cleaned the TB with TB cleaner by spraying the cleaner into the TB and butterfly with the engine running. He kept it from stalling by manually giving it gas.
Now the car seems to run perfectly but the idle has increased from about 700 to 900. He assures me that the idle will settle back down.
Has anyone experienced a higher idle for awhile after cleaning their TB? How long did it take to return to normal.
I had to drive about 45 miles after the TB cleaning, mostly highway, and its still at 900. I know Amsoil TB cleaner is a spray that is used when the engine is running.
This was a different product, not sure of the name. I suspect it couldn't harm anything by being used with the engine running and he insisted on doing it that way. The upside is he didn't charge me for the TB cleaning and all in I only got charged just over Cdn$35 (US$30) which is what the Nissan fuel filter alone would have cost me at the stealership.

The fuel filter should be replaced every 30K. I had my first one replaced at 35K and this one at 61K and change. I decided to get it changed prior to 30K (26K on it) as it hadn't been replaced in 5 year and 5 months. A lot of black gas came flowing out of it when it was held upside down, so I'm glad I changed it.
It's hard to say how long your fuel filter has been in place. It might have been replaced at 30K and 60K and may not be due for replacement.
Do you know if the car got its 60K major maintenance? Have the spark plugs been changed? What kind of shape are they in? This might tell you when the fuel filter was last replaced as it could have been at the same time as the plugs. If the plugs look old, chances are the fuel filter is too.

I drove the car only about 6 miles today. Initially it was idling at 900 when warm, but leaving a store just now, it was at 900 when I started the car up, but then dropped to 700 and was at 700 when I got home.
I guess I got a tad ahead of myself as the idle is now back to where it was before the TB cleaning. With any luck it might drop slightly more. Factory spec is 550 to 650 for a 5-speed, but I've always been a tad higher than that.
Next up is to get back out on the highway and open it up and see if I can tell any difference in throttle response.
I am reluctant to clean the IACV for the first time because I don't believe it needs it.

Mine did that too. But I had njmaxseltd set it manualy because it was two weeks and my idle was still at 900. After he set it manualy it has been fine since. I heard that it is supposed to settle down too. But mine never did.
