rear strut cartridge

i went to replace my rear strut cartridges today and the KYB cartridges stick out past the end of the tube by about a quarter inch. as such, the threaded cap that secures the cartridge in the tube doesn't go on all the way and has about a quarter inch of thread showing.

i got KYB cartridges # 365079 and i have double checked the number and that is what i am supposed to have.

this is not giving me warm fuzzies. is this normal?

Were the old ones original? If not, there might be a 'filler' in the bottom for stanza or whatever u got there...

It's not for my maxima, but when I replaced the strut cartridges on my '88 Camry with KYB cartridges, I noticed the same thing.

I didn't have any problems with the struts after it was installed.

not only with KYB cartridges, same thing happened when I raplaced my rear cartridge with a monroe sensatrac one, the only difference is that that end is only sticking up by about 1/8 of an inch or less, but after the circle metal washer is put on, the end cap did not go in all the way either, but I made sure it's as tight as I could possibly get it, and things seems to be ok. This was about 3k miles ago.

1. Shave the bottom thingie, that is welded to the bottom of the KYB with an angle grinder or...
2. Use a KYB cap (I was told it existed, but never got a hold of it)

I simply live with the cap not all the way in since I replaced my struts.

i have a 94 max - gxe model. i was replacing the originals that were well past their useful life. i looked inside the tube and there is nothing in the tube to cause this. the spacer that is welded on the bottom end of the kyb strut cartridge is the reason. it is evidently used to make one cartridge fit many makes and models of cars by welding different sized spacers on it.

Did you end up figuring everything out?
as long as the gland nut gets like 5 threads inyou should be OK

i think about half of the gland nut threads go into the tube. the others replying to my thread have all had the same experience and with other brands as well.

i only have the rears replaced but i drove the car about 15 miles to find a rough road and the car was a heck of a lot more stable on it. i'm going to install the front struts after lunch today.

Are you out celebrating the White Sox? My wife is.

I received only the cartriges, no gland nuts. Internetautomart told me to contact KYB and I did, but they probably played a dummy and replied, that the Maxima cartriges did not require glund nuts. There was no reply to my second email where I asked them if we were talking about different things etc. Anyway, I am not going to redo the job, the original nuts seemed like they sealed the struts pretty firmly.

Replaced my two weeks ago with KYB bought from internetautomar. The thread also still stick out about 1/4 inch when I tight it all the way in (using the gland nuts came in the package). I guess it's normal then.
Good to see another maxima in Plano.

the kyb's should have come with a brand new nut. mine did. they went together perfectly. not sure how bad it is to try and get those with out the struts, just yell at kyb for a while unless your happy with it

i think tarzan shaved the bottom spacer so he could use the original nissan gland nut. i had tried to get info from kyb's web site and i had better luck talking to myself.

I just put KYB's and B+G springs on my max recently and they were the same way. I just cranked them down with some locktite and everything seems great.

Yup me too on the KYB's. They will only thread in as far as you mentioned and they will be fine that way. If I'm not mistaken, somewhere in the KYB install notes it even mentions this.

So how do you guys like the KYBs? I'm about to replace all my struts soon. I'm sticking with the factory springs (had Suspension Tech springs years ago but with three 200lbs joining me for lunch I had to take them off!).

after about 2 weeks of having the kyb's, i like them. there is one section of road that i drive on that is pretty bad and now I feel comfortable doing 60 mph on it where i had to keep it down to 40 before and slow down even more to avoid bottoming out at a few places.

Thanks, it was sort between the KYBs and Springtechs but I don't know much about the Springtechs. I've used KYBs Gasmatics in the past and liked them.
