Autoshifter Position Switch
Autoshifter Position Switch
Does anyone know were the switch is that allows that car to start only when the autoshifter is in Park or neutral?
Almost every time I start my car I have to move the shifter out of and back into park before it cranks. I wonder if I need to replace it, or maybe its just loose or missaligned...

There is not really a button. Your shifter has a series of notches in the base that "locks" it into place, and allows it to move freely from Reverse to neutral through the drives but not back to R or Park. You may want to check and make sure none of the notches has broken or that the shifter button has not stuck. To do this you will have to remove the armrest console. If all else fails just replace the shifter arm.

My guess is that it's located in the center console, but it could be on the transmission housing like njmodi suggested. Consult a haynes manual or FSM.
Good luck!
Thats exactly what I think I need. I just didn't know what it was called. Thank you.

It only enables the ignition when in Park or Neutral. If this switch fails it usually fails in the disable position so that you can't start the car at all. They don't fail very often and when they do I don't think it's a very costly part.

FSM also shows what Nissan calls the 'inhibitor circuit' on the left side of the tranny, towards the front bumper.
