Oil Smells Like Gas

I can smell gas in the oil on my dipstick when I'm checking the oil level. Bad news? What are some of the possible causes? Blow-by? Leaky injector(s)? Anybody have this experience? If so, were you able to fix the problem?

Possibly a bad piston ring or you could be running too rich. Experiencing any other problems with the car?

Send an oil sample to Blackstone Labs to see whats really going on.

Oil is a petroleum, so is gas. It's normal for it to have a bit of an odor after being in a combustion engine.

My car runs fine. The gas smell is fairly strong, moreso than what oil smells like. I think my car burns some oil which leads to my suspicion of a bad ring/blow by.....have any of you ever repaced a ring on your Maxima's engine? Isn't that a pretty expensive job? Should I just not worry about it? I mean the engine does have 170k+ miles. Maybe it's just time to upgrade to a G35 coupe or something.

well if you can afford a G35 do it but until then, change your oil (assuming its not brand new) do a compression test, just some generic diagnostic procedures to make sure it wasnt just a 1 time thing. just my .02 though

It's normal.

It is fine! My oils smells a little like gas. Car works fine.

You know, that oil DOES go through the pistons. Gas goes into those pistons and combustion takes place. I think it would be kind of unrealistic to expect your oil to stay like new after it washing around the cylinders.

I say that if your car runs fine, do not worry about it.

If you want to test your rings, do a compression test.

Edit: Oil washes around the cylinders. Not the pistons heads. Just the cylinders around those pistons.

Oddly there has been little interest/replies to this post.

Does anybody else even know what worn oil normally smells like?
