First time I hear about cleaning coil packs. Since this is an electronic device, I would be very careful about applying liquids on them. How about some sort of acetone, which evaporates very fast, or some brake cleaner, TB cleaner, or even rubbing alcohol with a tooth brush?

Just take them off of the car, take apart gently, and remove all gunk. Its really pretty straight forward. Just experiment, and be sure to be gentle. I'd just use water personally, and make sure it completely dries before you put it back together and start the engine up. Also, make sure everything is making good contact.
