Freon recharge
Freon recharge
I need a recharge of my freon and the mechanic is telling me $200 whicc is unbeleivable. I asked him if I could buy some myself from Auto zone and do it myself and he said yes. I'm not too good with cars and like an idiot I disconnected the a/c line while working on my car not knowing what it was
I would really appreciate If anyone could link me to a write up on how this is done. I checked the stickies but didnt find anything, also I dont know if Im not looking hard enough but I cant find a search function for the forums because I'm sure this has been asked before.

Well I see since this guy isn't gonna help you but flame you. I will give you a search function you can use to search this forum.
Go to www.yahoo.com click advance next to search.
Where it says show results with: type in what your searching for.
Then where it says Site/Domain click only search this domain/site and type in maxima.org
Click Yahoo search
and you will get your results but as I searched and found nothing on how to refill it but you can try doing your own search just thought I'd try to help

if you disconnected a hose and all the refrigerant escaped, i suggest you take the car to a shop and have it done. the a/c system now needs to be evacuated (pumped out) to make sure no dirt gotten in the lines. then the system has to be re-charged with the proper amount of refrigerant and oil. you need gauges to see how much refrigerant is going in so you don't over charge the system.
not sure what year they changed it, but if its r-12, you can't buy it without ase certification and it is extremely expensive!!! if it's r-134, you can get it at any auto parts store. as stated above, you need to evacuate the system to remove all air/moisture and create a vaccum so the system sucks in the freon. then you need to add at least half the freon to get the syst. to operate and check for leaks. if you let it out and know it doesn't leak, you could just fill it. you need to know to evap/charge through the high or low side, this is not a tough job, but requires some knowlege.
ive done it and it couldnt be easier. start car, turn on a/c, stick the valve on the can of refrigerant, hook it to the port on the a/c line near the passanger side strut tower, fill until the gauge reads correctly.
if you have a leak good luck on that one.

the a/c system has a pressure sensing switch that prevents the a/c compressor from running and damaging itself when refrigerant pressure gets too low. i don't think that he will get any refrigerant loaded from the cans you buy at target or kmart or where ever.
all 4th gen maximas use R-134 refrigerant, the change over was in 1992.

Open lines means you need to evacuate the system before you recharge it or you'll never get the correct amount of R-134 into the system. If you try to recharge it yourself without drawing a vacuum, the correct amount of R-134 will never be drawn into the system before you exceed the operational pressures of the system. You might get cold air, but it will never be consistant. On hot days you'lll have poor cooling.
You must put an A/C system under vacuum if the lines have been open prior to a recharge.
All 4th Generations Maximas use R134a, which is not freon. You use that word and people will start worrying about the ozone layer again. Greenpeace will flip your car over and set it on fire.
Get your system pressure tested to make sure your seals are good. Most likley, at least one of them is leaky and that's why your A/C sucks. Don't get it recharged unless you have the system pressure tested and the seals replaced first.
My A/C sucks, I've never recharged it ever and the car is 10 years old. It's low on the priority list though, it only really bothers me in July and August. I'm more of a "windows open" kind of guy anyway.

Ok so I bought 2 cans of R134 refrigerant and the valve/hose combination except I have no gauge. Does anyone know how many ounces of refrigerant the a/c system holds?
I'm pretty sure its completely empty now because disconnecting the hose releases no pressure whatsoever and the air is very warm.
