5 speed flywheel removal

When I did my clutch job in the spring I didn't remove the flywheel since I didn't have a good stopper or an impact wrench. This time (tranny rebuild), I intend to resurface it.

Any tips on making/finding/borrowing a flywheel holder? I'd rather do that than buy an impact wrench for just this job.

Once the bolts are out, is it easy to remove? (My RX-7 flywheel needed hours of beating it with a dead-blow mallet to pop loose!) I sure hope this isn't as punishing.

good luck with that, i still think you'll need that impact wrench to ease out this operation because i never heard of a flywheel holder yet on this org. i know what it is, but i never heard of one here. good luck.

Impact wrench is the easiest. You can try a good electric one. Even if you have to rent one, it's worth it.

So you're saying once I have the bolts off, it pretty much comes right off? That's good to hear.

Well I have a kickass air impact, (IR 600ft-lb), but I don't yet own a compressor and last time I used it I drove across town to rent one for $80. Then I have that massive thing clogging up my tiny workspace. I've heard such good things about electric impacts I might need to buckle up and buy one.

Pity though, as a flywheel holder might cost $20 and it's the only thing I anticipate needing the impact for.

The holder might be a good investment. I've ghetto rigged something to hold the flywheel and it's always a hassle. If you have the holder, you can just put a breaker bar on the bolts and get them off. But make sure you use a 6 point socket

When I removed my flywheel it really wasnt that bad. I didnt need to use an impact wrench, just a little more muscle and liquid wrench. Maybe I was just lucky.

How did you keep the flywheel from rotating? Does anyone know where to buy a flywheel holder?

What I did was spray the bolts with liquid wrench, wait for it to seep in. Put the socket wrench on and tap it with a brass hammer. Once the bolts broke loose i just racheted them out.

I think I'll try that, and if it doesn't work, I'm headed to Sears for an electric impact. Much as I like new and useful tools, that money needs to go elsewhere right now.

The flywheel on the maxima is TOO easy to get off, Ive never had a problem with 4 or 5 Ive pulled. Just use a screwdriver with a square shank... there is a hole you can wedge the screwdriver in, then stick the body in the flywheel teeth. It won't damage anything, and it holds the flywheel so you can break the torque, or apply it, when removing and installing a flywheel. Too easy.

or you can turn on the car and just hold on for dear life.

-get a screwdriver, wedge it in (there's a little slot)

or you could get an electric impact gun, should work very well.

Hmm, I looked for a place to try something like the screwdriver trick but didn't see it the first time. Anyway, I'll look harder this time - thanks for the idea.

Yeah, I used my 3ft long flat screwdriver. I went through the top, near the iacv, and stuck it into the teeth. The bolts aren't on too tight, maybe 75lb/ft.

Well, I'll be cowkicked?! I've never seen that tool before. If I get stuck, I'll order one from a state-side tool supply like this one.

Haynes recommends using a screwdriver, If it worked for them it should work for you.
