Why do I not have ABS?
Why do I not have ABS?
Just thought this was kinda interesting - I have a 98 SE w/out ABS and my friend blackmaxx96 has a 96 SE w/ ABS. Why would the same model in a newer car not have a supposedly upgraded safety feature like this when an older model does?
It does help with stoping distance by a couple of feet. well from a 60mph stop. The only thing i dont like is that it engages at the wrong time twice on me in the past 2 months during the rain.
well my first maxima had ABS, my second without. I would rather have ABS 1000x.
I got out of a ton of accidents because of them,
ABS will help you in any situation.
the reason why straight stop is better W/O ABS is becasue you are burning tires, thus losing the tire. Both cars in a inevitable accidet, would suffere aobut the same amount of damage, just fiferent places
W/O ABS = two new tires ($130)
W ABS = from bumper ($200)
now if you are ina curve and slam your brakes.. the car W/O ABS will flip or pop a tire... = way more damage. ABS lets you stire in the direction you want to go.
man I'm tired I need so sleep....

I had to watch a whole video on ABS when I was in driving school. They did tests and the only time threshold braking actually stopped the car faster was when it was on a gravel surface. The effect of the wheel locking caused it to "plow" a wall of dirt stopping the car shorter. Otherwise, an effective 4 wheel ABS system should always stop your car faster. It also helps you steer the car if you start sliding.
With all the snow/ice up here nobody in my family is willing to drive a car without ABS. My Mom had an accident several years back in our 85 Grand Am because she slid on ice into a semi. We've had a few other instances throughout the years such as doing 360's after tapping the brakes in our 77 Olds 442 on an icy Winnipeg highway...not fun. I wouldn't consider ABS as important if I lived in a warm climate however.

You'd think Infiniti was an upgraded model as well.

As well, I have ABS (it's apparently not common on 4th gens) and it makes working around the fuel filter and steering rack a total pain. But in the rain and snow it all makes up for it.
Whoever said they don't like the ABS kicking in when they don't want it was either trying to hotdog, or is a plain bad driver. ABS will not kick in unless the wheel comes to a stop - which means you've already begun a skid and lost control. The ABS is basically saving you from an accident, or at least unnecessary tire wear.

I was delighted to find ABS on my 96 ES. Just last week some a***ole turned left straight across me; the road was wet. I knew the ABS was there so I just crammed the stop pedal to the carpet. The car stopped so quickly I could hardly believe it, and saved me from ramming the guy in the side. I could feel the 'gravel' sensation through the pedal. In either of my non-ABS motors I would have bashed the idiot for sure. I'm not going to buy another vehicle without ABS... what's your life worth?
I agree with dgeesaman, Get good tires and that will make up for lack of ABS.
Plus the older ABS systems such as that on our vehicles (let say pre 2000) isnt as refined as the newer systems that are much more sensitive and intelligent. I've locked up my ABS equiped car more times than I'd like to remember, but I had very bald tires on so...

I don't like abs. I prefer pumping the brakes myself to letting the abs system do it. I feel as though I have more control. With ABS most of the time I hear that you should not pump the brakes, I'm too used to doing it for myself so when I do buy a new/newer car that has it standard it will take some getting used too. We'll see what the verdict is then. (When I'm rolling in my CTS-V
)

When putting on the D2's this weekend I accidentally severed the passanger side ABS wire (thats why the ABS light was on when we went on the test drive!).... It was raining really bad tonight, and I wish I had ABS... I had a pretty close call, but luckily I was used to driving a car without ABS (RX-7 and supra didn't have it), so I knew how to react.....
For autocrosses and track days I will be pulling out the ABS fuse, but on the street, I'm glad I have it sometimes even though it does get annoying on occasions...
To clarify for you:
The SE is a very basic model when it comes to luxerious items (also has options not available on the GLE and GXE)... I guess the original owner of the car wasn't a fan of ABS when he got it, or didn't care.....
Either way, just do the 300zx big brake kit and call it a day :thumbs up:
hahahah

We in the Boston area recently had our first snow that actually accumulated on the road. The ABS helped greatly when it came to negotiating slippery roads. I'm not a "pro" driver like most of you (then again most of you just think you are
). Like most drivers out on the road, I need the ABS.
