annoying problem that wont go away
annoying problem that wont go away
Ive had a CEL that I had checked by Autozone and the code was p0443 "EVAP emissions control purge valve fault c". I then asked the dealership and they were 100% positive is was the purge valve on the charcoal box near the gas tank. I replaced it and it went away for 2 weeks then came back on. Went back to them and they said to check the main wire harness in the engine bay for a broken wire. Did that and they checked out fine. Asked them again and they said my charcoal box is probably no good and to see if it weighs 4 pounds or carbon falls out when I shake it. It weighs 2.5 pound and no carbon falls out. So now I'm stuck here and rather not have them fix it or ask them again as it seems to be leading me no where and wanted to see if you guys have any ideas on what I could do or check next? Also Ive already checked the stickies and it didnt contain this code in it Thanks.
I believe what happens is that the charcoal ends up clogging the valve (as the canister ages)... so the actual fix is to replace both the canister and the valve. You might be able to pull the valve, clean it and re-use it, with a new charcoal canister...
snap-on scanners usually remind you to have the gas cap checked for proper seal when evap system codes come up. may be worth having checked, try an emission station that can pressurize the cap. my .02
I had that same problem on my 97 SE. I took it to my mechanic, not the dealership, he went to the ALLDATA site that shops are privy to and eventually changed out my vacuum cut valve, purge solenoid and the evap vent control valve. This all cost about $500. My charcoal canister was light as well but it didn't need to be changed. The symptoms my car had was a strong smell of gas and the check engine light was on as well. Since I park in a garage I had to get this fixed right the first time. Also, I forgot to mention but this was a two part job over a period of 6 weeks. He replaced the purge solenoid and the vacuum cut valve in Apr and turned off the SES. Exactly 31 days later the light came on again, and the evap vent control valve and O ring had to be replaced. The dealership would have easily hit me up for $1,200. Hope this helps.
