heat only when accelerating // ice cold when idling
i'm trying to figure out (googling) what this could be. Seems to be a simple coolant flush would do the trick, but i'm thinking it could be the thermostat. but then if the thermostat is stuck in either position, shouldn't the car give off no heat and car overheating/not warming up?

aren't the gates that control airflow driven by engine vacuum?
I don't know alot about it for the maximas but I have heard of older cars having the vacuum seals in the ventelation system wearing out causing things like hot/cold air flow becoming messed up and lower/upper/defrost vents blowing when they shouldn't be.
Can't offer anything other than that. maybe someone can give more info

Have you checked the coolant level lately? What you describe sounds like your low on coolant. A lazy thermostat will make the car run cold. Is the temp gauge stable in the normal (mid) range? Do you have auto climate control or manual?
The airflow control on our cars is driven by electric actuator motors, not vacuum.
