I have a similar problem, 127k miles, but was told not to worry about it. I've noticed if I'm going easy on the gas, when my car shifts from 1 - 2, I feel a very minor thump / jerk. If I'm accelerating hard, and the car shifts at higher RPM's, the 1 - 2 shift is perfectly smooth. Changed my tranny fluid, cleaned the screen to no avail. I'm not really sure what could be causing it...

Sounds identical to my car. I have 209,000 on mine. I added a tranny cooler to just to be nice.

my car suddenly started doing that and shifting pretty hard, not every shift, but many. then i got a code and my od light was blinking. i replaced my drop resistor with a low mileage one from a junkyard and it went back to shifting normal. (knock on wood)

Took my car once to a tranny shop that specialized in imports (that i trust)once my 97 hit 300KM and they said it's normal. As long as your not getting
codes and the hard shifts don't happen on higher gears you're ok.

They went into a complicated explanation about shift solenoids and about 5 minutes in they completely lost me. :/

Once you notice that the gears aren't engaging as they should that's the time you'll know that means $$$.

There are two likely causes of a hard 1-2 shift. First check the 12ohm resistor on the driver's shock tower. It has an aluminum heatsink on it and a connector with two pins. If that's not it and your CEL light isn't on, you'll need to check and see if the temp sensor is open.

Even though this isn't my thread, thanks to everyone for posting up these repllies, it's much appreciated. I'll check out that resistor, thanks again.

I tested my drop resistor and it read 13 ohms. Does it need to be replaced? Or is it enough in the 12 ohm range where i can leave it alone?

i just wanted to know because i thinki used to get that to and my tranny fluid is fine but someone told me to change it and change the filter inside the tranny to be safe, so seeing that u did it and there was no change i will forget about doing it....lol

There is no filter per se. There is a screen and it's designed to last the life of the trans. The best think to do is to flush it every 60K or so. If you can't do that, then at least change what you can get out of the drain plug every 30K. It's really pretty easy to flush if you just disconnect the pressure like (one with the bango fitting) and run it into an empty gallon jug (you'll need a few feet of 5/16 line for this). Start the car and let it fill the jug (takes a minute or two). Refill the trans and repeat until you have bright red fluid being pumped out.

As for the 13 ohms, that's fine. Does it still shift into OD? When the temp sensor fails it will shift hard 1-2 and won't shift into OD. See if your OD button still makes the RPMs jump.

Yeah, I was hoping it would go away too, lol, but I guess it wasn't a bad idea to change it anyway since my fluid was pretty dirty. From what I understand, the tranny filter is sometimes referred to as a screen, and you can usually get by by just cleaning it. I didn't change the fluid myself, but the guy who did it told me the filter was in good shape, just needed a little cleaning.

if it doesnt shift into OD u gotta change the temp sensor, right. Where is the temp sensor. I think my tranny is screwed cuz its not shifting into OD, but it could be this sensor?

the car shifts into overdrive just fine. The only thing is hard shifts from 1-2. EXCEPT when the tranny is dead cold. It shifts normal until it warms up (which isn't long).

weird, mine shifts hard till it warms up. And I noticed it shifts alot smoother with O/D off, is this a sign of more crap to come?

i havent found anywhere to get a drop resistor online, but i did find people talkin about a drop resistor mod that disconnects the drop resistor sayin it makes the shifts more tighter. so i dont know what to do.

ok i found something it atleast shows me where it is and what it looks like but on the site they tell u how to rig it so u can turn it on and off either allowing the transmission to shif at full line pressure (whatever that means) or normally.

i bought one from a junkyard from a low mileage i30 for $15. go to your local dealer if you want new, they're only about $35 there.

Cool, I was wondering where to get one myself. Does anyone have a general idea of what resistance reading would warrant a change of the resistor. ie, should I change it if I get 10ohms, 14ohms, or is that within an acceptable margin? Thanks
