Motor Mounts???

Motor Mounts???

hey guys i reciently bought a 99 se 5 speed woot
and when i start to release the clutch it feels like it is hopping arround...and no it isnt the tires
just kinda jumpy i was wondering if it was common to feel this is maximas
the tranny was just rebuilt and it now has a stillen fly wheel and a act clutch in it i was just wondering if anyone out there could help just a little
and if it could possibly be the mounts how much and what kind i have looked arround and havent been able to find mounts for my car
i would really like to upgrade the mounts for something stronger just to secure the motor...thx guys

Wheel hop usually means bad mounts. Mine is doing the same thing, the tranny mount is going so I need to replace that soon. Meanwhile just take it easy on the tranny and avoid popping the clutch.

I thought wheel hop was a common nuisance among all maximas, something to do with the control arms moving back and forth or something. Pardon my attempt at making sense

I think he's got a chattering clutch, not wheel hop.

If its the clutch chattering then you need to learn how to release the clutch at the right time as you accelerate. If you release the clutch too soon or too quickly and your engine RPM is way too low, it'll chatter. If you release the clutch to slowly and your engine RPM is way up, it'll chatter as well. You need to find that balance and get consistent at it. I'm not sure how it is with an aftermarket flywheel and clutch. I just replaced my clutch a few months ago and I stayed with OEM parts, no chatters.

Recently,
I installed Exedy stage I and Fidanza....

Noticable clutch chatter. My motor mounts were shot, though. So I got the polyurethane mounts. IT sure helped, but there's still some clutch chatter... some, especially untill the car warms up.
I tried experimenting with different release points, yet to no avail. Sure, If I baby it, the chatter is not noticable.

I guess it happens with aftermarket flywheels/clutches on some vehicles, and possibly due to some installation errors/problems.

DId I also mention that car has trouble starting (crankshaft position sensor troubles)?

I'm used to it... It's really not a big deal, especially considering the benefits.

1) Original clutch never chattered
2) ACT clutch chattered like crazy. Using higher rpm was only fix
3) Chatter eventually killed my engine mounts
4) Replaced mounts, still had chatter
5) Rebuilt tranny (replaced seals and bearings) and did some welding. Smooth as stock now.

The part that required welding was the "sleeve" part of the housing where the input shaft comes out of.

thx guys i do think that it is chatter like i mentioned b for i just got the car and was learning the clutch i was just letting the rpm drop too low and was causing the chatter but i do belive that i will still need the mounts when i release the clutch slowly the motor jumps a little and i feel it i have had work for the past two days and now i get a chance tomm to look underthe hood and c if that is the problem
also it is making a strange noise when i start it up
low pitch guurt* just for a second...u guys think that it could be the belts or maybe the flywheel *shrugs* ill post tomm and tell u what i find

well, if you ever want to consider replacing your motor mounts anyway, pull up cattman's website and find their contact number. Cattman still offers the polyurethane motor mounts for 80 bucks. good luck.

And this alone fixed the chatter? What exactly did you weld. What to what?

i can only find them for 280 are u sure that they are only 80

yes, i am danm sure about this. but you must call cattman, and preferrably speak with brian catts himself. tell him you are following up a groupd deal on the place racing poly urethane motor mounts. it is 80 bucks for sure. i got 5 4th gen maxima's in my family, and 3 of our maxima's are equipped with these mounts. they were 80 bucks each when i bought them.

well, if it's not place racing, it must be ES mounts (energy suspension). those mounts aren't bad either, and cattman has lots in stock.

I borrowed this pic from Motorvate. The red arrow points to the sleeve that was welded. The green is where the sleeve attaches to the rest of the housing. If I find a better pic Ill post. Otherwise, wait till my clutch goes out in another 60k and Ill take pics then.

These are the inserts form the group deal correct? How did you get the inserts in the housing? Did you do it yourself or have someone else do it? Let me know homie, I have some and I am trying to figure out how to get them in there.

To remove the old motor mount, take a saw and cut through the rubber and metal casing. Reciprical saw or air chisel also works quickly. The metal casing is actually really soft, so don't worry.

After that, press in the new insert. Couldn't be simpler, only takes a few min each.

i just took it to a shop and have it done for a hundred bucks.

what they did was sawing off the old mounts and used a mount compressor to press the inserts into the mount casing. the whole thing took about an hour.

BTW, talk w/Cattman, he might have an exchange program started. We talked about a "core" charge, that way you don't hafta mess w/any cutting or looking for someone w/the correct hydrolic press machine.
