Letter from Nissan: Rear subframe recall

Did anyone else get a letter in the mail from Nissan stating that there is a possibility of thier rear subframe and/or rear subframe bushings corroding due to high salt use in your area? Apparently, they are sending letters to everyone who lives in "salt" states.

And they are also extending the corrosion warranty to 13 years unlimited mileage.

I haven't received my letter on the seats nor the bushings..... I live in Cleveland, OH and we get A LOT of snow here so my seat heater is on all the time and the roads have tons of salt on them.

Yep, I got it too... they said that it is worst in cold areas where salt or other things are used on roads in the winter. They also said that my area (Missouri) wasn't one of the places of concern. Still, they extended teh warranty to 13 years/unlimited miles (but just for corrosion of the rear subframe).

I still have yet to get the letter about the heated seat recall (I have the DPP too). Has anyone actually got one yet?

Yup. I got the same letter as discussed above. This letter also advised that Colorado was not a problem state for rust. Well, until just recently they did not use salt on the roads in Colorado (only sand), but now they use some salt at the intersections and on some major roads. Not happy about the potential for rust problems, but happy to the the extended warranty on that problem, should it occur.

Checked my mailbox today and all I had were 2 bills from Nissan, one for the Pathfinder and one for my Max. Bastards....

Silvermax-04, I didn't know they didn't use salt on the roads out there, don't you get 100+inches of snow each winter?

That is the snow that falls up in the mountains. Here along the Front Range of Colorado we get much less snow and is melts quickly when the sun comes out -- not like back east where it stays cloudy for weeks -- we get sun usually the day after a storm.

It has only been in the last few years that they use any salt. The historic way snow was cleared here was by plows and then spreading sand on any hard pack snow. Salt use remains very limited -- usually to intersections and some interstate highways.

Got my letter today, I don't think I need to worry unless the salt in the air from the ocean can make me rust out...

Got mine on Friday. They said that it wouldn't affect handling, just make a knocking noise in the rear. I wonder if that's the same knocking you get when the shocks go?

I'm not sure about the Co Springs but in Denver we have seen a switch to Magnesium Chloride as opposed to salt. And I haven't received a letter yet either.

...haven't gotten a letter as of yet. This is the main reason why I don't see myself buying another Maxima or another Nissan badge car in general. Their are good cars engine/performance wise, but the actual 'craftsmanship' really is disappointing. I've experienced problems and still am with the heat shield (at times sounds like metal grinding). I've had problems with the CD player (left front speaker will go dead out of the blue). A few others in here have had the suspension shimmy, the skyview recall, and the seat memory. For a car that's suppose to be one of the best introductory level luxury/sports sedans Nissan kind of flopped in a few instances with the Maxima. Now in the future some of us will have to worry about a rusty Maxima?

They have to go back to basics and make sure they have a very solid product before releasing it to the masses. I've just touched up a few items but there's many more. Has anyone seen the crappy work they did in the gas compartment. Very bad, and very ugly. Anywho I might just be going on but the truth is that Nissan it seems has put more time and effort into the Altima than it's flagship sedan and that by all means in my opinion is a huge mistake.

Funny, I live in Ontario where we get a ton of snow and all they use is salt yet I've yet to receive a letter.....I'll have to call the dealership to ask WTF is going on.

I'm almost starting to regret getting the 6th gen as I wanted a 5th gen Max instead.....but I love the car.

Got my letter, and like others I live where the only salt we use is on our margaritas. But I think it's a good move to extend the warranty 13 (!) years.

And for you guys saying this shows Nissan builds crap, you're full of it. Those of us who have been around a few decades can tell you that every carmaker in the universe has had issues like this and most of them have had worse ones. This is *nothing*, even if you DO live in a snow state, and I've got to hand it to Nissan for stepping up and addressing an issue none of us even knew about!.

...I'm aware of that in the past other car manufacturers have had much more serious problems than this. If a letter an extension of warranty makes you happy and gives you confidence in Nissan's products than that's pretty good. I, on the other hand expect better quality from a flagship sedan, especially one that is priced as high once you get it fully loaded as I have with the Elite Package. For the price that I paid for the Maxima (which I love the car by the way) I could've gotten a better made car (paid a few more thousands) but well worth it without the disappointments that I've had with this 6th generation. So as I said if a letter and warranty extension makes you a satisified customer than I guess Nissan has taken care of customer's such as yourself but it doesn't make up for the other screw ups that this car has shown.

Don't call the dealer, they don't know anything. Call the Nissan 800 number.

13 years. I will be 72 and not able to drive. lol

13 years for perforation - they don't claim anything about the bushings though. Sure all cars have problems, but this is rediculous. They do extensive testing on vehicles during the prototype phase including all corrosion testing and obviously this must already be occuring because they've sent letters out.

I've been in the auto industry for many years which included all product launches so they knew this was a problem. Sure they stepped up to the plate but it was too late in my opinion.

And the reason why some of you aren't complaining is because you live in salt free environments.......even Dodge Caravans are holding up where you live (not to mention rust buckets like Trackers, Sunrunners, or Explorers).

I agree Mike. Nissan can't win for losing. They step up and do a voluntary service campaign (not a recall) and they still get complaints.

This is a funny thread... no letter here for the 6th gen in the house... Cars are machines and they will break. Were any of you aware that when the new BMW X5 came out they were having huge issues with it? Their rear windows were falling out when they were rolling up... now that is a lack of quality. Nissan may not have the most fanstastic craftsmanship, but we do have the best engine and our trannys aren't locking up on us either (TL) and our styling isn't step-child ugly (Avalon). I like the Maxima... all of them ever since the car came out in the 80's. My family has owned all of them and we really like them. We have also owned other products... one of the Fords we owned literally blew up one time when we were on our way somewhere. SO, we will stick with Nissan. If you don't like them, then go buy a Ford 500... I hear they are really nifty cars.

I was partly wrong in my response but I called Nissan and they clarified the issue to me. The 13 year warranty is for replacement/correction of the rear braces in the vehicle in case they become cracked due to corrosion.

Car will be in next week for them to have a look and to correct the issue.....so I do give them kudo's for that yet I'm still a bit dissappointed with some of the issues that my Max has (gurgling coolant/poor heating due to lack of flow due to air pockets; fogging of nav screen, tons of BSR issues; rear seat won't go down; shimmy at 100kph; crap RSA tires, etc.).

Hopefully this car doesn't become a Volvo......

No letter yet and I'm in Minnesota where they drop salt on the roads like they are feeding salt licks to cattle! Actually, MN uses many types of deicing agents. IMO, you put a vehicle in a corrosive environment and it will rust, and fast!

Has anyone considered or done undercoating ? What's the cost and is it beneficial?
