car dies on start

Today I started my car, the rpm just dips below 500 and dies.
I tried to started it 2 more times and the same thing happens.
So I decided to start the car and keep the rpm at 1000 with my foot on the gas pedal.

The rpm drops a bit but I kept it at 1000 rpm and the car stayed on fine.

what you guys think the problem is?

sounds like a vacuum problem.

After keeping the car at 1k for a while does it run fine without you having to press the gas?

if it runs fine without any drive assistance after its warmed up some it wont be a vacuum problem as that would be present wheather the car is warm or not.

I would try cleaning the IACV, and check the sensor on it to make sure they are functioning properly, plus I'd check the TPS and make sure that is functional as well.

I started to have the same problem. I thought it was the PCV valve, so I replaced that, but the problem persists. I checked the codes, and I have a knock sensor problem. So I'm gonna replace that this weekend.
After that, I am at a loss.

KS will not affect your start up. It must be something else.

MINE DOES THAT TOO!!!! I hate it its soooooo stupid it only does it if it has been sitting after 10hrs it starts fine then dips to 0 and shuts off after that I have to lightly put my foot on the gas and it starts fine. I'm may video tape it and go to the service center and see what they think.

Clean your throttle body and the IACV. If that doesn't fix it, then check the engine coolant temp sensor and make sure it's within specs. The Haynes shop manual has a resistance ~vs~ temp table. If that still doesn't fix it, check the cold fast idle circuit on the throttle body. If the plunger isn't working you'll have to replace the throttle body. The cold idle plunger is not a serviceable item.

Because your in neutral. You must be on some sort of a incline/decline.

I've had a similar problem on my Altima as well as a toyota. Replacing the coolant temp sensor worked in both cases.

Are you finding yourself getting crapping fuel milage?

thanks for the replies

I forgot to mention, it was a cold start. After starting the car later again tonight it started up fine without the rpm dipping to 0 and the car dying out.

But as chucks98 said I am kinda getting crappy gas mileage. I replaced the coolant temp sensor about 6 months ago. But my Temp gauge acts up once in a while sometimes it would jump to the hot zone for about a minute and go back to normal temp then drops to cold and stays there. If I work the engine above 2.5k while driving it would go back to normal for a little bit then continues this cycle. What you guys think is the problem?

i would actually clean the throttle body first and see if that helps. I had the same exact problem where the car will stall after starting it (only during cold weather below 40 degrees). I cleaned my throttle body this past weekend, and now when i start it, my idle starts at 1500rpm and then it slowly decreases during warmup. I no longer have that stalling problem anymore after doing this!

I cleaned my throttle body (embarassingly dirty) and the IACV (took that mother apart) and cleaned that too.

It started right up no problems !!! Now I don't know if that half can of carb cleaner had anything to do with it, or that it's near 50 degrees outside. We will just have to wait for a 20 degree New England morning and see !

Ditto. Mine had the problem for 2 years. Mechanics couldn't fix it because the car never did it at the garage, only in my driveway in the morning. I first replaced the coolant temp sensor, hoping that was it, but it wasn't. I cleaned the TB and IACV last week, and problem solved. The valve had about an 1/8th inch of build-up on every surface in it, and the hole where it opens into the intake manifold was about 1/4 obstructed with build-up from inside the manifold.

Now I can finally get a remote starter!!!!!!!
